Thank you David Woof, Ron and all, for reiterating that safety is first. I
have one of the coasters with kyanite and glass center perfected in a
factory setting over 25 years by a professional….and i am pondering your
discussion as i sip my morning coffee…. yes the clear-blue glass fractals
and cracks have a differentiation about them from the beautiful cone 10
glazes that surround them… but glaze is also glass…. ever noticed when
copper red doesn’t turn red on one side that it, too, has that same
crackled look on the pots?
Decades ago i made 1 candle holder commission, then got sued because it
dripped onto the customers antique wood table when she used it. Not worth
the hassle.
The integrity to fit a clay with its ‘favorite’ glazes is the high road.
There is so much joy in sharing all good clay items with people new &
returning to buy.

Sincerely,
Kathi Koester

Hi Kathi,

Thanks for all that!

Just a few words about clay and glass. We are in the business of
bonding two (and sometimes many) materials together that have
different CTE's (coefficient of thermal expansion). When we get it
right it's a great result. When we get it wrong it's most times
dismissed as good enough. We can now usually predict when there is a
problem and even make adjustments in most cases using calculation. The
problem with using random glass is we don't know the constituents so
we cannot predict or correct.

When I was a student at art college in the 60's I used to make ash
trays with glass bottoms - almost flat. A friend to had a coffee house
decided he wanted some and I sold him a few dozen. There was no 2nd
order - they were all stolen by his customers.
