Hi

We are making coloured slips from Cone 6 B Mix &  oxides or Mason stains.

These slips will be used in our kids classes.  We would like to add food colouring
so blue looks blue, pink looks pink etc.

Does anyone know if the food colouring will change the final result of the slip color.
Or does someone have another solutions.

Many thanks for your kind advice.

with blessings,
Maxine

Food colouring in slips and glazes is a great help to differentiate each
colour, especially when using one over another.
Can also come in handy if you add colouring to a glaze when spraying to see
that the whole surface has been sprayed.
Great when building up thicknesses even of the same glaze

I keep food coloring in the studio where I teach, to help
students see how many layers of glaze they've applied.
(They can choose to add color to a cup of glaze for alternate
brushed layers, if they're having trouble seeing the thickness.)
I've never had any food coloring that I've used alter the final
color of any glaze. We don't usually bother using color with
slips, as thickness is less critical, and I expect my college
folks to cope with the notion that the blue slip is pink, so I
can't vouch for food color in slips, but I can't imagine that
any food color uses a ceramic pigment.

Blue food colouring will fire up blue! Actually, I've tried adding food
colouring to wax resist and it takes an enormous amount of it to have
any visible effect. Look into fabric dyes from an art store - they are
much stronger. You'll have to try firing them to see if they leave any
effect.
