Hi guys. Does anyone have any experience with coloring nichrome or central
wire in the fire? I am planning a project where I need "pollen threads" for
flowers. This is an architectural installation project, so I am trying to
use the most durable material I can.
My research online corresponds with my knowledge that these materials peels
off (shiver the kiln). I was wondering if I would coat it with a layer of
slip and color with stain, or maybe better, an engobe, how well it may
stick. I was also thinking of making it from paperclay, so that there may
be more room for shrinking. As I am writing this I thought since it does
not have to be translucent, I should consider stoneware clay, since it may
be shrinking less than porcelain.
Any thoughts out there will be appreciated.

Best wishes,

Antoinette Badenhorst

I am going to give advice that some people may not like. I askied your question in AI. Got some good advice especially using the wire as stamens of the flow.

Good luck

Thanks Terry. Yes I did the AI thing. Once one know how to use and
manipulate AI, you’ll also know it just do your searches much faster than
you can. You still have to check the facts.

Anyway, I think the biggest issue will be to make the clay stick to the
wire and then there is also the matter of metal bleeding through the clay,
which will not that easily happen to stoneware. I guess it is just one of
those things that needs to be tested and tried. But I was hoping some of
our old timers have experience to share.

Hi Antoinette,

Sounds like you want to fire clay on metal. I can't imagine the
expansions would be close enough. Perhaps getting the metal powder
coated would work.

I remember a Canadian Leopold Foulem ( disceased )he did a series using wire coated in porcelain clay. I tried to find some photos of the series, without success. He had teapot forms. Along with other forms. Try a search, you might be able to find this series.

Yes - I remember those - he made the form with chicken wire and dipped
them in white slip.

If the installation is accessible to the public, durability and resistance to curious fingers is crucial. Consider using building materials rather than art materials.

There are colors that are designed to be fired on to metal. Cloisonne enamel, polyester powder coat, and baked enamel come to mind.

Permanent metal treatments can be applied to metal, for instance chroming, electroplating and anodizing. In most big cities there are shops who can do this. Make some shapely metal forms, drop them off for plating, then install them into epoxy-filled holes.

The latest architectural paints for metal are fairly permanent. You would want 3-coat PVDF. Again, something that can be done in a shop, probably an auto body shop.

For me, I'd probably start my testing with powder coat. It's not impossible to do at home, and the temperature should be low enough that the ceramic will be unaffected.

Hope this architect's input is helpful!
Ivy

Hello
Might I suggest you look at work by Thom Bohnert
He has been utilizing wire in his work for many decades.

Yes, I checked it. This guy was thinking outside the box. Thanks.
Ron there are several artists that do it, my challenge is to make it to
where it will fit the flowers. I recall ceramic art that someone made
several years back, building houses. The clay cracked around the wire and
it blended some, but the effect was beautiful.

Thank you. Thom Bohnert make intriguing art. I used wire like this
before, but for now I need something coated to work with these flowers in
porcelain.
