Looking for that all purpose white slip that has been around for years.
I am at the farm and cannot remember the recipe.
it was one of those equal amount recipes...used with leather pots.

Hi Mel -
Equal parts EPK, ball clay, potash feldspar, and flint.

When Shasta Kruger was my artist-in-residence at the Craft Center, she gave us the STA (sticks to anything) base slip recipe that she learned from the late John Neely and was the standard recipe in the excellent ceramics program at Utah State. That recipe is available in the surface decoration section on the Documents and Handouts page of my website, but here it is:

STA (stick to anything) Decorating Slip
Applied to greenware or thinly to bisqueware
EPK - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 25
Ball Clay - - - - - - - - - - 25
Flint - - - - - - - - - - - - - 25
Cornwall Stone - - - - - 12.5
Neph Sy - - - - - - - - - - 12.5
Total - - - - - - - - - - - - 100.0
Plus -
Zircopax – 2.5%
Frit 3195 – 2.5%

You could leave out the Zircopax if you want, but if you have some 3195, do include it, because it helps the slip stick as the pots pass through early red heat in the firing.

Mel,
I don't know if this is the slip you're after. but my notes list equal
parts EPK, silica, OM4 ball clay, and Custer feldspar.
As you know, Custer spar hasn't been mined since 2023 so other potash
spars may need to be used.
Stay warm,
Dave

Is this it:

* EPK (Kaolin): 25%
* OM4 Ball Clay: 25%
* Custer Feldspar: 25%
* Silica (Flint): 25%
* _(Optional: Add 5–10% Zircopax for extra whiteness/opacity)_

After the disappearance of Custer I made the switch to Mahavir and have been quite pleased with its performance in glazes.

It seems a little fluffier as a dry material and suspends well in the slurry.

I prefer Mahavir over Custer as a glaze material even though it costs more.

Hi Mel,
I've used "Ron Meyers' White Slip" on leather hard pots, and bisque, since it was published eons ago. Not given in the equal amounts you were looking for, but it isn't finicky and stays where you put it.

Ron rated it from ^04 to ^11. I found this to be true, and also took it to ^14. (Test it yourself if you go for ^14)

Kaolin 34.0
Feldspar 27.0
Ball 20.0
Silica 19.0
Zircopax 8.0
Soda Ash 0.25

(The Soda Ash helps it stick to the raw ware in early stages of firing.)

Great and durable for carving imagery through the slip. Takes graphite drawings well before carving. Takes stains and overglazing well.

Misneach,

Also: A Wood Fire White Flashing Slip, ^ 6 to ^14

Helmer or EPK 30.0
Neph sy 25.0
XX Saggar 20.0 (or other High Silica and Alumina Ball Clay)
Fredericksburg Fire Clay 15.0 (a coarse fire clay) Remember Tony Clennell and I used to call this "Fast Freddie"
Cedar Heights 10.0

P.S. to all concerned, Helmer needs at least cone 8 to avoid dry "Melon Skin" surfaces.
