Hello,

Usually the bolt that serves as the pivot for the foot pedal has a nut with
a nylon insert inside. This kind of nut (Nyloc lock nut) stays in place
but can be adjusted and then will stay as set.

If your current pedal flops around, try adjusting (tighten) that nut. When
properly adjusted you will be able to set the speed and remove your foot.

If your pedal isn’t as described, buy a nyloc nut and a Belleville spring
washer. Remove the existing nut and install the washer cup side in, install
the Nyloc nut over that. This combination should allow you to set it and
forget it, as Ron Popele used to say.

Excellent, detailed explanation, Joe!
For those unfamiliar with the described part, Nyloc nuts don't last
forever. The more they are adjusted, the more they wear and will need
replacement. It's important, easy wheel maintenance.

Good advice for wheels with variable speed foot pedals as most wheels
now have.
But.... As I recall, the original question was for an Estrin wheel, a
company no longer in business. We had these wheels at the community
college when I first began teaching back in the 1970's. Estrin wheels
were kick wheels, built of a square steel frame and had a continuous
running motor attached to the frame on a hinge with an attached pedal
that one pressed down with foot to engage a rubber wheel with the
steel flywheel. I don't know how one might switch to stand up throwing
on this wheel given the configuration. I imagine one might remove the
seat to stand over that part of the frame, but raising the entire
wheel to a height suitable for standing would also raise the fly wheel
and attached motor. Doa serach of Estrin pottery wheel in "images".

Thanks for that. I have not seen one of those wheels. I have used a kick
wheel with a motor-friction-interm-contact drive. I think I liked it more
for trimming rather than throwing.

Looking at the pictures on the google, I think any modification would make
it harder to use. I guess I need to read the original post better or at
all?!?
