I love the feel and look of Rhodes 32 at ^10, but find it cutlery marks badly.
Anyone have suggestions for keeping that high-alumina satin feel but hardening the surface?
thx,
Eric Newman

Hi Eric,

That is a clay matte glaze and relies on an over supply of alumina to
crystalize during cooling. The crystals are sharp and multifaceted so
the surface does not reflect light as a smooth surface would.

That type of glaze is a poor choice for a liner glaze - not only
because they mark in use but they are short of silica which means they
are attacked by acidic food.

If you reduce the alumina (clay) and increase the silica using a line
blend you may find a happy spot that will work for you.

I can design a line blend keeping the expansion the same if you like?

Hi Ron -
thx for the offer, but I'll just play around with adjustments on my own. I expect reducing the AL percent will lose that wonderful tactile feel of the microcrystals.....mutually exclusive outcomes. Sigh

Hi Eric,
I mixed up a small batch of Rhodes 32 and tested it on test tile and small sauce bowl. Cone 10. On an iron bearing clay body, the glaze is wonderful. Eric, I agree with you on the tactile feel of the micro crystals. It’s beautiful. I suppose that’s why the glaze had such popularity in the 60’s and 70’s.

I use the sauce bowl myself for dipping sauces with egg rolls, etc. It has been through the dishwasher several times with no apparent degradation of the surface. As far as utensil marking, I have no experience yet. If that proves a problem, I think a small increase in silica may fix that. Then that glaze batch could be used on the service side of say a plate, and the original recipe on the other side. Spraying the glazes would seem to make sense.

Ron would know more of course, but there are no toxic materials in the glaze to leach.
Just some thoughts,
Paul
