Hi Vince -
Re that psychedelic glaze - well I can't prove anything, but between
friends one can speculate -
There are several immiscible liquid phases present, think oil and
vinegar salad dressing, bubbles of the various distinct liquids come
to the surface and burst. If you look carefully, you will note that
there are several circle fragments in the markings. The various
circles of the distinct liquids bubbles overflow each other, cut each
other off.
As you might imagine, this is a distinctly unstable phenomenon, the
kiln has to get hot enough that all of the liquids form, not so hot
that the liquids all become mutually soluble. The colors are the
result of the nickel staining the distinct liquids rather
differently.
That first glaze, I think with your eye, likely it will be clear the
sandpaper-like texture. The closer the melt gets to smooth,
naturally, the closer it gets to mutual solubility. If one looks at
phase diagrams for ceramic systems, regions of immiscibility are done
shaped, smaller extent the higher the temperature.
