Hello All.
I am taking my morning coffee thinking about the years of camaraderie with this great group. I can see that many of the original members have gone silent. You have said what was necessary to be said; I have also posted less and less as the years whizzed by. I think of Mel telling us that he has taken his collection of pottery to the local museum. It is now my turn to do the same.
In two days, Francine and I will say goodbye to the house that has been our home for the past 38 years. My children live within walking distance. So, we were blessed to watch them build their lives. We enjoyed our grandchildren dropping by for milk and cookies after playing in the park. They are now entering college and university. They still drop by to say hello and to let us know what is going on in their lives.
The most difficult part of this new adventure has been the downsizing.
I started with my collection of photos. There were family images, grandparents, parents, and my own family images. I have digitized most of the older black and white photos over the years. The difficult part was throwing the physical, paper images into the recycle bin. This was a difficult task.
Next came the closing down of my home studio. I managed to sell my studio equipment off piece by piece. Items that remained went to the ecological collection site. I gave my collection of books to the Val David, 1001pots residency site. I will participate with 1001Pots.com one last time this summer.
I have found that downsizing is a brutal event. Decisions on what to hold on to, and what to discard was emotional. My military memorabilia, farewell gifts, received on posting. I threw everything, with the exception of my Commissioning Scroll, and my service medals. I spent 32 years in uniform travelling all over, and of course, bringing home souvenirs. It all went to the goodwill.
My studio is bare and clean. One good thing is working with clay. It is easy to wash the walls and the floor. I received a good fee for my equipment. My chemicals were sold for a small amount. It was more important to have them taken rather than feeding the dump.
I did take temporary storage. I have a large collection of two-dimensional art and my bronze sculptures. I also have wax models that need cleaning and casting. This will have to wait until the move settles down. Then I will make the final attack at culling the remaining work.
My only regret is that I did not make this move when I was a bit younger. The Senior Residences in my area are very difficult to find, especially one that meet our requirements. The wait list was two years.
All in all, I am moving positively towards my new life journey.
I will go silent for a while and contact the list once the dust settles.
Terry
