[Clayart] pennies from heaven

Here's a new one on me, although it may be very old to many of you. one of
my students wants to put a penny in the bottom of a pot to see what it will
do.
I fire to cone 6 ox. , 2150 in my kiln, Pennies made before 1982 melt at
1950F those made
after 1982 are 95 % zinc, and melt at 788F. So obviously before 1982.
(what happens if one uses pennies made during 1982 is a mystery).
So since the copper melts at 1950, how does it act during the last 200
degrees of my firings? will copper oxide fume and affect the other pots in
the kiln? or just what?
Also, been trying to get a hold of Phil, from Bison tools. There is some
indirect indication on the web that he is no longer with us. Is that
true?
Thanks everyone. from N. Calif., where it is hot now, and no rain expected
til October. Had a 4.4 slip/strike earthquake centered about 5 miles from
me. Nothing broken, and lasted only a few seconds, but it was
impressive!

I have never done this, but I think it would react like a glaze that has been over fired. It might also flux right through the floor of the pot. I would for. safety. place the pot on a high refractory brick.

Yes as Ron says: "protect your lungs"
And as many of us know; whatever we inhale is absorbed into our body tissues (for better or worse)
Inhaling Zinc fuming causes a condition of "metal fever" and all our organs of elimination including external body skin are affected.
One can taste it in the mouth and smell it on the breath.
Liver and Kidneys also must assist in the elimination of the metal fumes we inhale.
