I'm currently looking for a larger second-hand kiln to replace my small gas
kiln. I'm looking for a 150-300 liter kiln (I believe that's 5-10 cubic
feet) that can fire efficiently to cone 10 and I'm particularly interested
in slow-cooling my glazes. As a result, I was thinking it would be more
interesting for me to find an old kiln with heavy bricks that already cools
very slowly. Does this seem like sound reasoning?
I'm asking because where I live (France) there seem to be a lot more
"newer" used kilns available that are made with light bricks or fiberwool
and I'm wondering if it's worth waiting to find a kiln with more mass if my
primary interest is playing with slow cooling processes schedules.
And in general, I'm open to any advice about what to look at, think about,
check on when getting a used kiln :) ?
I might also do a kiln conversion of an electric kiln because I can
potentially get one for free. I've been reading about the TDI downdraft
kiln conversion. Any thoughts on this option are also welcome!
Thanks,
Jeremy
