Dear GeoClaw users and developers:

We are planning to hold a GeoClaw Hackathon May 16-18, 2025 at the University of Colorado, immediately following the annual meeting of the Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS) in Boulder, which is May 13-15.  More details will appear at
    https://www.clawpack.org/geoclawdev-2025/

Many developers will also be around during that conference and available to provide GeoClaw assistance to current or potential users.  The deadline to register for the conference is April 1, coming up soon.  It is always an interesting conference, and this year's theme is "Exploring Earth's Surface with Models, Data & AI".

There is limited space available for the hackathon, so if anyone is potentially interested in joining us, please contact me for further information.

Dear Randy,

I hope you re doing well.
Unfortunately, I can not come and I regret it a lot as I would love to participate to the Hackathon. Is there a way to organize a kind of online Hackathon session for these who can not attend and come to the conference ?

Best regards,
Lubna

I would imagine that we could work something out, at least asynchronously.  We should set up a page, maybe just issues for the geoclawdev-2025 repository, for things people suggest to work on, or maybe have things they are working on and would like some help with.

That s a great idea.
Due to time delay between countries, that sound great.
Then, I hope the webpage could last the period of the hackathon so that these who can not attend to the meeting will feel involved in the event.
I look forward to hear from you all !

Lubna

Hi Lubna and everyone,

I think the best course of action is to have everyone who would like to suggest a topic to open an issue on the github repository at

https://github.com/clawpack/geoclawdev-2025/issues

and we can collate ideas and collaborate over the issue discussions.  We may resurrect the use of slack or gitter, which you can find links to at

https://www.clawpack.org/community.html

My guess is that we will use gitter given the setup and use of matrix, but we will probably update when we figure out what works.

It has occurred to me now that we could also enable discussions on GitHub too.  Not sure I have an opinion, but this is not a bad thing to maybe turn on in the actual repositories.  If anyone has any experience with community discussions and would like to share that would be helpful.

Dear Kyle,

Thank you for all this suggestions.
On my side, that sounds great.
I don t know for the others.

Personally, years ago, I was involved as a volunteer in online digital volunteering and we used to have community discussions for humanitarian crisis management, then I was part of the core team for a couple of years so I used to have online and offline community activities to manage real time digital  crisis mapping.
So I think I can contribute ,
Github is a platform as any other platform.
if you think I may help, let me know.

That could be really exciting.
Thank you for your efforts to make that others like me could be involved in your event for next may,

Lubna

Dear Kyle,

The hackathon is about to come.
From here, I have no news as for your excellent idea .

What are the plans ? Do you keep thinking of online / offline participation to the hackathon ?

Regards,
Lubna

I think Randy may respond with more details, but if you have anything you want to bring up I would suggest opening an issue on the hack-a-thon github repository.

Hi Lubna and any other GeoClaw users who want to talk with us during during the upcoming hackathon:

Given the range of topics people might want to discuss and diverse time zones, it would be best if you either raise an issue on the geoclawdev-2025 wiki or contact me at r...@uw.edu or Kyle at kyle....@gmail.com, and we will either communicate by email or set up a time for you to Zoom with the relevant developers, if we can find a time that works.  This will probably work best for us on Saturday May 17 sometime 10 am - 4pm (Mountain Daylight Time).
