On Claverton the subject of energy storage comes up regularly. There is an interesting website here for Highview who have developed a Cryogenic Energy Storage system using liquefied air or liquid nitrogen as the storage medium which, can apparently deliver three services simultaneously:
i) energy storage;
ii) convert waste heat to power from co-located industrial or utility plants, including bio-mass and Energy from Waste plants; critically to include low grade heat;
iii) deliver cold: air conditioning, data centre cooling or refrigeration.
If it is working, it could provide a way forward to addressing the problem of intermittancy in time.
Personally, I am not enough of a scientist to be able to assess its technical performance.
I would be fascinated to hear from he scientists amongst you, and to understand how it works, and what sort of efficencies it would deliver.
