This is awful news. I emailed Rob Birnie this morning and he told me
that unless they find a buyer by March 28th then Planet Rock will be
no more. It seems strange that GCap Media would axe Planet Rock for
being "economically unviable" when last month the station reported
that its at highest level with 563,000 weekly listeners which is more
than BBC's 6Music. Let's hope it can be saved.

Jamie did say:

It even makes a profit, just not enough profit it seems!
If there was more time I'm sure there are 100 bands that could invest
£10k or 10,000 listeners that would invest £100 (or a mix of the two)to
buy it out.

Hiya,

I *would*, but I can't get it [or 6 Music] 'round here.

Take care,
Claire

This is unthinkable. I can't believe that some companies are so short
sited.
I set up my internet station 24rock.net after I heard Planet Rock. It
re-kindled my love of rock music.
It is by far the best traditional rock music station available, ever.
I listen about 3 hours a week and when I do I cannot find fault with
it and the main presenters are first class, Nicky Horne is a legend.
It seems to me that once a rock show gets popular the owners get
greedy and want too much. Over 500,000 listeners a week sounds pretty
good to me. Local commercial stations don't get that and they have
been going for 30 years.
The owners are not rock fans I take it (although I thought some of
them were).
In an industry that generates as much money as the rock industry,
economically unviable my ass. Cut some costs and get some passion in
at the top.
Surly somebody will rescue it.

Planet Rock is the only reason I'd buy a new DAB radio (the old one was crap so I got rid of it).

Is this something EMAP/CR could buy as a business opportunity. Come on Scott & Sian, you know you want to release your inner DJ!

Rob

I have 2 stations in the memory of my digital radio: Planet Rock and
theJazz! Gutting. PR's a morning thing, theJazz is to doze off to.

The other rock stations I can pick up just don't cut it; the Arrow
just puts too much Coldplay and cack on, and even more Genesis than PR!

Typical - GCap media is run by short sighted beancounters with no
ambition - they simply seem to cater for the morons who listen to
Capital Radio etc. Let's hope it is saved, it is the only decent
radio station for old farts like me.
