Another Hidden Gem - A Recomendation

Like some of you who are not into the iPod/iTunes revolution I am
constantly on the look out for cheap CD's to replace, particularly, my
old cassettes but also my Vinyl.

So when PlayCom offered me Bachman Turner Overdrives' "Not Fragile"
album for a mere £ 2.99 I just could not resist.

It has clearly (pun intended) reminded me just what a stonking album
this is, for those of you not familiar with the album, please dont
assume its no better than the very well known "You Aint Seen Nothing
Yet" as this is a contender for weakest track on the album, a worthy
single no doubt, but not up to the very heavy high standard of the
album as a whole.

Trust me guys, this is a really heavy rock album, the title track is
particularly brilliantly heavy when played loud. It wont suit the
thrashers amongst you but it most certainly is a contender for first,
or at least, very early (1973), Heavy Metal album.

Blinding album, go on give it a shot.

Thanks for that Woody, I must admit the only song I knew from BTO was the
dreadful You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet until quite recently when I began to
play "Takin' Care of Business" on my Les Paul.

I vaguely knew the song from some movie or other and although it only has
essentially 3 chords it is a pretty hard rocking song all the same.

Such a shame that some bands have astounding success with one song and only
ever get known for that, such songs appear on the compilation CDs with
monotonous regularity. "Don't Fear The Reaper" is another, yet I loved BOC
before that song, and not much after :)

Good call... it's an impressive album!

I bought the vinyl a while back for not much in a 2nd hand record shop
sale and have since picked up a few more of their albums. I have
1978's "Street Action" sat in the waiting to listen to pile at the
moment.

BTO are one of my favourite bands, I reckon all their albums have a

Not a lost gem to me. a real belter of an album, simple straight
forward heavy rock as we used to call it. As the track on the album
says "a sledgehammer" of a record.
When AC/DC 's If you want blood....... first came out this was just
about the only album that I would play to compete with it for raw
energy. Glan you brought it to the attention of those who have not
heard it.

I would also reccomend Starz by Starz, not quite as heavy but good all
the same. When I listen to it I always hear it as the album that
Diamond Head should have made, even though it came out before they
were a band.

Not so much a lost gem but if NWoBHM passed you by, you may not have
heard "Loose & Lethal" by Savage. An acknowledged cult classic, this
is well worth a listen as well. It may take a moment to accept the
unusual vocals but its well worth the effort.

agreed - great album. the title track rocks, along with 'sledgehammer'
' blue moanin' and the rest.
a tip for anyone struggling with the whole saga involved in
transferring vinyl to cd - buy a mini disc recorder ! it is sooooo
much easier and quicker ! I copy a whole album side at a time and
then spend approx. 5 minutes editing to divide it up into tracks and
delete 'cracks and scratches' etc.

if only i could find an easy way to copy my mini-discs to
cd ! ........

and whilst on the subject of hidden gems, I had Y&T's "onetwo" arrive
in the post today. A new(ish) reissue of the two early albums from
when they were called Yesterday & Today that I had to order from the
band's website cos they'd sold out on the merch stall at the recent
shows.

Love the first album Bill, but not so keen on Struck Down, because I always
found the production a bit messy. I tried to buy them in Cardiff last week
but as you found, they sold out of them.

I have both albums on CD and was wondering if these are just repackaged or
remastered too? My remastered copy of Earthshaker is so much louder than my

According to the disc, they're remastered but the packaging is a bit
disappointing. I was hoping for some history of the band at this
point, you know something a bit more in depth about how they formed
and got to the point they were at but instead its just pictures from
the original albums.

I haven't bought the remaster of Earthshaker yet... quite happy with
my vinyl copy.

On the subject of coping vinyl...I noticed in this month's CR that
they are selling a cable that allows you to to copy vinyl straight
onto your computer. It's just under £30 on the CR merch website, so
I'm sure it could be bought cheaper elsewhere. It's something I might
look into, as I have loads of second hand records bought for £1 or £2,
but nowhere to really set my record player up permanently.
