Hello commanders,

A new Counselor 2.891 is out, with a handy new Map Legend, one-click updates, and an important change to how you upload orders.

Please upgrade before July 1.
From July 1 you will need this version (or later) to upload your orders. Older Counselors will be turned away. Upgrading now takes a minute - download below.

Download Counselor 2.891

Your personal upload token

Order uploads now carry a personal token so we know they came from you. The first time you submit, Counselor sets it up for you - fetch it with your website login, or paste it from the website. You can view or change it anytime under Settings, or on the website's new My Counselor Token page. This is the change that needs everyone on the new version by July 1.

One-click updates

When a newer Counselor is available, the update notice is now clickable - Counselor downloads the right installer for your system and opens the folder so you can run it. No more hunting for the download.

See the whole map at a glance

A new Legend button on the map toolbar (next to Display Portraits) opens a key to every map symbol - terrain types, settlement sizes (camp to city), fortifications (tower to citadel), capitals, ports and docks, roads, rivers, bridges, fords and landings, plus armies, fleets, characters, magic items, gold mines, combat and movement paths. It floats beside the map, so you can keep it open while you plan.

Much faster startup

Counselor now opens your game about 3x faster. We removed a slow image-loading step at launch, so you get to your turn in a few seconds instead of waiting around.

Zoom out to see the whole map

The map can now zoom out below 100% (hold Ctrl and scroll down), so you can fit a whole large map on screen instead of only zooming in. Ctrl+0 snaps back to 100%. And Counselor now remembers your zoom for each screen, so docking a laptop, switching monitors, or changing resolution keeps the right zoom on every display.

Cleaner toolbar and map

The toolbar icons are now crisp and adapt to light and dark mode, and the distance bubbles on the map (range, march, sail) are sharp at any zoom.

Copy and export from any table

Right-click Copy and Export to CSV are now on every table in Counselor, including the World Builder and the Battle Simulator. Handy for crunching numbers in your favourite spreadsheet.

On the website (clashlegends.com)

  • My Counselor Token page (under My Config): view, copy or regenerate your upload token whenever you need.
  • The site now speaks your language: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Catalan across the menus and player pages, including the Statistics charts.
  • Clearer team set-up: the Sign Up page now walks teams through joining in four quick steps, and Request a Game explains how teaming works.

What's the real purpose of the personal token?

Does that mean that if you can't submit orders for an IRL problem for example, a friend can not submit orders for you? If that's the case, it doesn't seem a good idea to me :(

I have the same concern as Jordi.

Can we still send orders for allies?   I think every turn I am asked to send orders for allies who are travelling or busy at work, etc...

Hi Jordi and Joao Eduardo,

I'm glad you asked, It's a fair question and an important one to me.
There are a few reasons behind the change.

First, security and open source.

The old Counselor had a couple of passwords hardcoded deep in a shared library. That was a problem for a few reasons:
  (a) the same shared password had been in use for 22 years, a real security risk, and
  (b) it prevented me from publishing the full source code, which made it harder for people to help with coding AND blocked the project from claiming a proper open-source license (MIT or GPL).

An open-source license unlocks several free benefits such as free GitHub hosting, free SSL certificate for the website, free code-signing certificate for the Counselor installer, and more.

Which means I can finally turn HTTPS on for the website, get the Counselor installer signed (removing that annoying "Windows protected
your PC" warning during install), and then enable Counselor auto-update so you don't have to worry about manual upgrades. That makes my life easier too. I won't need to keep doing extra work to support the one player who hasn't updated Counselor in a couple of years (yes, you'd be surprised 😆 ).

Second, and most important to you: you can still send orders for friends and teammates. That isn't changing.

What does change is that moving forward, the Judge will know who the player is AND who the sender is. Why does that matter? Because knowing both unlocks a few things:

  - Per-player preferences: each player chooses whether they want others sending orders on their behalf or not. Most are happy with it, but some aren't. And more than once I've had to deal with drama from someone changing a teammate's orders because they disagreed with them.

  - Receipts to both sender and player, so everyone knows what was submitted.

  - Shadow / standby orders: "use these orders if the player doesn't send anything, but use theirs if they do."

  - Collusion and fake-account detection: new ways to spot and block fake accounts. That may let me bring back Death Matches and Gun
Boats, and make FFA more fun.

  - Tablet / phone results viewing: opens the door for a lightweight app or web view for reading results on the go.

  - And probably a few more possibilities that aren't on the roadmap yet.

So the personal token isn't there to lock anyone out. It's the foundation that makes all of the above possible.

Hope that helps,
The GM Team

Hi John,

OK,  I got it.  Many benefits, which is great.

Another question:  when I am asked to submit orders for a teammate, how will it work?
I just submit with my own token and password?  (or I will need his info?)

Cheers
Joao

Shadow orders have long been a good idea and I'm glad they are now possible.
Do they happen automatically when I submit orders for an ally? Or is there some way we indicate they are shadow orders?
