Hi everyone,
I hope you had a great break, and that the first day of the New Year has been promising! I'm ready to hit the ground running in this final stage of preparation for our Giant Field Experiment, and Leah and I are counting on you for an energetic start to the quarter.
I'm writing to let you know that we'll have our first meeting on Tuesday, January 8, at 5:00 pm in 4307 LSB (same room as before).
As I think you know, drum roll........It is critical, urgent, imperative, mandatory, and otherwise REALLY, really desirable for you to come to this and every Tuesday's meeting. Let me know immediately if you cannot make it, so that we can consider whether you should stay involved with the lab this quarter.
Recall that Leah has just moved to Lake Isabella, where we've rented a great house as our field station, so I'll be running the meetings this quarter.
Things to keep in mind:
1) Read every word of this (and all) email message(s) very carefully. Read them twice if you need to in order to be certain that you've absorbed it's message!
2) Please put the Tuesday 5:00 meetings on your calendar. This is your most important meeting of the week, so you may not schedule any work during this time.
3) I will bring approval codes to the Tuesday meeting. If you are continuing to enroll in EEMB 197 or 199, you'll have to get a form from Mike Tucker, which I will be happy to sign.
4) I'm hoping to take each and every one of you to the field this quarter, for a long weekend. We'll leave on Fridays in the afternoon (with luck, before 4:00 to avoid rush hour) and return on Sunday Night (around 10:30 pm). On each trip, I will take three or four students, so please come to Tuesdays meetings with a list of weekends when you KNOW you can come with us. The first weekend we'll go will be either January 18 or January 25, depending on the weather outlook (we won't want to plant the seeds if it's really stormy).
5) Please continue to work on the seed-preparation (10 seeds per tube, PROPERLY labeled and double-checked).
6) Please plan to work in the lab and/or greenhouse for 8 hours during the first week of class. We are still WAY behind where we need to be.
7) Sigh.....There are also fruits to collect and xantiana plants to pollinated in the greenhouse. From your return to UCSB until our meeting on Tuesday, please proceed with the fruit collection and the pollinations of xantiana UNLESS you need to be reminded of the process. Please not do anything in the greenhouse if you are uncertain of the procedure. :-)
Please tattoo all of the above onto your right arm. Or your left arm.
Have a great week and weekend, and I'll see you on Tuesday.
Bridget, would you be willing to meet with me on this Sunday (January 6) at 3:00 in the afternoon? If anyone else is also available at that time, please let me know so that we can together assess the greenhouse situation for the full group meeting on Tuesday.
I'm really looking forward to seeing you all again!
Best,
Susan
