Hi everyone,
It was great to see you today. After our meeting, I chatted with the new undergraduate advisor, Mike Tucker, and we reviewed the options for upper division Research-for-Credit enrollment. If you've already completed two units of EEMB 194 but aren't ready yet to take on the full responsibility of an Independent Research Project (for which you'd enroll in EEMB 199, which requires a 3.0 GPA), the most appropriate option is to sign up for EEMB 197 ("Directed Studies"). Like EEMB 194, this requires attendance at our weekly meetings and 6-8 hours per week of solid work in the greenhouse or lab. EEMB 197 and EEMB 199 both earn letter grades as well, and neither course has an exam.
To enroll in EEMB 197, you will need to:
1) Meet with Mike Tucker, who will verify your eligibility (enrolling in EEMB 197 requires upper division standing and a GPA of 2.5 -- I'm not sure whether this GPA applies only to EEMB courses or to your GPA in the Bio major, or to your entire GPA).
2) Obtain an EEMB 197 form from Mike, which you'll need to fill out, and I'll help you provide some text describing the goals of the course.
3) Return the form to Mike Tucker before October 8th, and he'll submit the information so that it is part of your transcript.
OK, I think that's it. Let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Susan
