to Undergraduates Fall 2012
Hi everyone,

For those of you who have already completed two quarters of EEMB 194M, some of you have already managed to meet with Mike Tucker or Andrew Kroes to learn about EEMB 197 (Directed Studies) and to obtain the required form to fill out.    As you know, the form requires that you describe the goals of your Directed Studies, and I have to sign the form after you've done so (which I can do at any lab meeting, or if you drop by my office, or if you make an appointment so that you know you'll find me in my office).

If you're wondering how to fill out the EEMB 197 form, I've attached a boiler plate description -- specific to our work this quarter -- that you can use to help you complete your form.  What I expect you to do is to READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY.  If there is ANYTHING that you don't understand, then you MUST bring your questions to the lab meeting this week.  It is really important that you understand the basic motivation behind the greenhouse experiment so that you don't tell the undergraduate advisor things like "Oh, we wash pots in this lab" as a description of what our work is about.  You know who you are.  :-)

When you fill out the EEMB 197 form, you can use the attached document to guide you, but you must complete the form in your own words.

If you have discussed with me the possibility of conducting an EEMB 199, then you should be ready to write a one-paragraph description of what you'd like to do.  Brandon, Bridget, and Arrash, I'd like to receive by email a paragraph from each of you that describes your project, which I'll edit and then you can submit that with your EEMB 199 form.  Hannah and Lindsay, we can discuss your prospective projects during this week's meeting, and then I'll expect the same kind of one-paragraph descriptions from you, which I know you'll be able to do a great job on.

If there is anyone else who is ready for an EEMB 199, please don't hesitate to contact me so that we can identify a project for you.  During our weekly meetings this quarter, we'll talk about the three or four clear options for EEMB 199 projects, which you would be able to initiate in winter quarter if you're ready for the time commitment.

See you all soon, and it was really fun meeting with you all today (Alana, Graham, Katie, Dani, Laura, Kellen, Robin, Emily, Kyle, Brandon, and Arrash!).

Best,

Susan
