TORONTO (Reuter) - America Online Inc. has launched AOL
Canada, which will feature Canadian content, the giant on-line
service announced Wednesday, further extending its international
reach.
The new service from AOL, the leading U.S. on-line service,
will also provide electronic mail, areas where customers can
post messages and easy access to the Internet computer network,
the Vienna, Va.-based company said in a news release.
Key partners in the new service include Citytv, a
Toronto-based television program producer; MuchMusic, Canada's
first national music television channel, and Shift Magazine.
Intuit Inc., which makes the popular Quicken financial
management software, will provide access to new kinds of
financial information through AOL Canada.
Local Canadian content will be split into four ``channels'':
News and Finance, Weather, Sports, and Media and Arts, the
company said. They include news, business, political, sports
and entertainment highlights from the Reuters news service,
access to Canadian publications and Internet links to Canadian
sites, including the Montreal Museum of Art.
Canadian subscribers will have access to the content offered
on the German, British, and U.S.-based America Online service.
All worldwide America Online subscribers will have access to the
full Canadian service, the company said.
AOL has already announced plans to launch a French service
in March.
The company also said it had eliminated a C20 cents (15
cents) per hour access surcharge for Canadian members calling
into the U.S. network. AOL stock was trading at $44.25, up $1
from Tuesday, on the NASDAQ market early Wednesday afternoon.
