TOKYO, May 10 (UPI) -- Despite Japan ratifying the Kyoto Protocol and reducing greenhouse gases to decrease global warming, Tokyo has decided to not force carbon dioxide cuts. Unidentified official sources told the Mainichi Daily News the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will stop forcing companies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions because of strong opposition from the business community. Since the federal government's recommendation to cut emissions was not legally binding, Tokyo city officials had asked an expert commission comprised of scientists and business representatives to discuss the possibility of forcing companies to cut carbon dioxide emissions. Members representing businesses said the emissions cuts were too much of a financial burden for employers. The commission recommended the metropolitan government commend companies that voluntarily cut carbon dioxide emissions.
