JERUSALEM, May 20 (UPI) -- Israel Aircraft Industries has proposed a
$150 million plan for upgrading Hungarian Air Force MIG-21 jets to meet
NATO standards, the Telegraph newspaper reported Monday.
Hungary has budgeted $1 billion to overhaul its air force and plans
to retain 30 NATO -- North Atlantic Treaty Organization -- approved
planes. IAI would improve weapons, computer and aviation systems in 28
Hungarian MIG-21 planes and therefore reduce the need for buying new
jets.
Israel proposed the upgrade to undercut competitors American
McDonnell Douglas and French Dassault whose newly manufactured F18 and
Mirage 2000 fighters cost 10 times the price of the Israeli upgrade.
