BEIJING, May 7 (UPI) -- Legal and technical experts in China
are drawing up the country's first laws governing activities and
research in outer space.
Qi Yongliang, an expert with the Chinese Institute of Space
Law, was quoted by Xinhua as saying, "Since it is one of the major
space powers in the world, China needs a comprehensive space law to
regulate its work in space."
The newly formed CISL is composed of China's Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Technology as well as
the China Space Technology Sciences Group, a government-controlled
space industry conglomerate.
Li Benzheng, vice director of the systems engineering
department in China's National Space Administration, said the
country is in the process of drafting rules and regulations on
liability for space objects launched by China, as well as in the
fields of commercial contracts involving space and international
cooperation.
