NEWARK, N.J. (Reuter) -- The New York Giants have reportedly
signed defensive tackle Christian Peter, who made as many
headlines off the field in college as he did at Nebraska.
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting Monday that Peter,
originally a fifth-round draft pick of the New England Patriots,
signed a three-year contract and will make the rookie minimum of
$131,000 in 1997.
At Nebraska, Peter was arrested for urinating in public and
third-degree sexual assault. He is also a defendant in a civil
trial in which a female student at Nebraska alleged Peter raped
her twice.
The Patriots released Peter less than a week after the draft
following protests of the selection.
The Giants' management first approached Peter in November of
last season, bypassing former coach Dan Reeves.
