UNITED NATIONS (UPI) -- A new team of U.N. ballistic missile experts
will arrive in Baghdad this weekend to seal equipment that could be used
in testing rocket motors for missiles with a range prohibited by the
Security Council, a U.N. official said Thursday.
The sealing of the equipment will be an interim measure, said Swedish
Ambassador Rold Ekeus, who heads the U.N. Special Commission that is
charged with destroying Iraq's chemical, biological and nuclear-grade
weapons.
``This new team will try to prevent any tests from taking place,''
Ekeus said.
A similar team of inspectors left Baghdad on Monday after Iraq
prevented it from setting up monitoring cameras at two test sites, which
have not been publicly identified.
The cameras are part of a long-term monitoring program ordered by the
Security Council to prevent Iraq from producing weapons of mass
destruction and missiles with a range greater than 150 kilometers, about
95 miles.
The government of President Saddam Hussein accepted the monitoring
program, but has tried to prevent U.N. inspectors from effectively
implementing the measures.
