MADISON, Wis., May 3 (UPI) -- Teaching assistants at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison went on strike for two days, but say
they will not withhold final grades for undergraduates.
The Teaching Assistants Association picketed classes instead
of teaching students last Tuesday and Wednesday in an illegal
walkout to push demands for a two-year contract that keeps
university-paid healthcare benefits.
Final exams are scheduled to begin next week.
The TAs, whose contract expired last July, had threatened to
withhold final grades for thousands of undergraduate students. The
union backed off the threat Sunday, before the negotiating sessions
set for Tuesday and Thursday, the Wisconsin State Journal said.
State officials said they would determine if the walkout did
any harm before pursuing possible fines or dismissals against
teaching assistant union members.
