CHICAGO, May 8 (UPI) -- Rev. Dennis Holtschneider will be
president of Chicago's DePaul University, the nation's largest
Catholic university, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.
The Vincentian priest faces the challenge of expanding the
university's relatively modest endowment when he takes office in
July.
While the school's endowment increased to $200 million from
$63 million in the last decade, DePaul still relies on tuition for
80 percent of its operating budget.
"It's especially important at a place like DePaul, where you
don't want to put the full price of tuition on the backs of
students," Holtschneider said.
Holtschneider said he fully understands the impact a healthy
endowment can have on a university's academic mission.
"A university can't leap toward greatness without a strong
endowment," said Holtschneider. "To make great things happen you
have to have a strong endowment."
