WASHINGTON, May 10 (UPI) -- About half of Seattle residents
at least 25 years old have a bachelor's degree, giving it one of the
country's highest rates of college education.
The U.S. Census Bureau, in a release Monday, said 48.8
percent of Seattle residents 25 years and older had a college
degree. That figure is nearly double the national rate of 25.9
percent of people 25 or older having a bachelor's degree.
Using data from 2002 American Community Survey, the Census
Bureau said other cities with high bachelor's degree rates are:
Raleigh, N.C. with 48.0 percent, San Francisco with 47.8 percent
and Atlanta at 41.2 percent.
States with high percentages of college graduates include:
Massachusetts with 35.5 percent, Colorado with 33.5 percent,
Maryland with 33.1 percent, Connecticut with 32.9 percent and
Virginia with 31.7 percent.
Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon said the degree data
are important because college graduates can expect to earn about
twice as much as people who have a high school diploma.
