BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro, May 2 (UPI) -- The alleged
mastermind of last year's murder of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran
Djindjic surrendered to Serbian police Sunday night.
Milorad "Legija" Lukovic surrendered in Belgrade, said
Serbian Interior Minister Dragan Jocic, according to the BBC.
Lukovic had been sought since Djindjic was shot and killed
by a sniper on a Belgrade street on March 12, 2003.
Lukovic is being tried in absentia for the killing. Twelve
other suspects are also on trial.
"Legija showed up in front of his house in Belgrade and told
policemen guarding the house that he wanted to surrender," Miroslav
Milosevic, Serbia's public security chief, told the BBC.
Lukovic had been a senior figure in a feared Serbian special
forces unit, the GSA or Red Berets. His nickname, Legija, came from
a spell in the French Foreign Legion.
