GROZNY, Russia, May 10 (UPI) -- Grieving Chechens buried
their assassinated leader Monday amid a promise from Moscow to find
and punish the killers, the BBC reported.
Thousands of mourners Monday attended the funeral of Chechen
President Akhmad Kadyrov after his assassination in a bomb attack in
Grozny on Sunday.
Prime Minister Sergei Abramov has taken over as the new
leader of the republic and is said to be consulting his cabinet
about how to respond.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed revenge
for the bombing, which is being blamed on Chechen guerrillas.
Kadyrov, 52, was fatally wounded when a device exploded
during a ceremony on Sunday marking victory in World War II.
The estimated death toll varies between six and 30, with
around 50 injured.
At least two other senior Chechen officials were among the
dead and a commander of Russian forces in the region was
hospitalized in intensive care with serious injuries.
