UNITED NATIONS, April 30 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council
Friday threatened action against obstructing the 2003 peace accord
between the Ivory Coast government and the opposition.
The 15-member panel authorized a statement expressing its
"readiness to consider further steps to encourage full
implementation of the Linas-Marcoussis agreement and to promote the
process of national reconciliation ... including actions that might
be taken, if necessary, against individuals whose activities are an
obstacle to the full implementation" of the agreement."
It did not specify any action.
The statement said because of mutual unconditional
commitment to the agreement, the council decided to deploy the U.N.
Operation in Ivory Coast, known by its French acronym UNOCI, to
support the peace process.
The mission was "to culminate in 2005 with the organization
of free, fair and transparent elections."
Referring to opposition protests last month that ended with
some fatalities, the council expressed "its grave concern at the
events," which occurred in the West Africa nation and at the current
impasse in the Linas-Marcoussis peace process, which it called "the
only possible solution to the crisis."
French Licorne and U.N. peacekeeping forces separate
northern and southern Ivory Coast factions.
