PACOIMA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 2004--The PMI
Foundation recently announced a $100,000 challenge grant to Habitat
for Humanity of San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys. PMI will match
every dollar of donations from the public up to a total of $100,000,
resulting in potential donations of $200,000. In addition to its
challenge grant, The PMI Foundation donated $50,000 to Habitat for
Humanity of San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys to help complete the
construction of three homes.
PMI, along with Pacoima community leaders and residents, recently
joined Habitat's San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys affiliate in
Pacoima to dedicate the three homes. Each home fulfilled a deserving
family's dream of homeownership. These families have contributed
"sweat equity" to the building process. Their tangible efforts,
combined with the hard work and contributions of many volunteers
allowed them to realize their dreams.
"I want to emphasize the effect that actual homeownership can have
on the lives of families who never thought they would have that
opportunity. Today, we not only help build homes, but hopes and
dreams. Working together, we make a difference, one home at a time,"
said Charles Broom, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, PMI
Mortgage Insurance Co.
The homes were dedicated to three hardworking families--families
who might never have achieved the goal of home ownership without
partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Nicolas and Marlene Enriquez
have three daughters, and they heard about the program through their
daughter's school. Living in a trailer, where all five family members
slept on a single sofa, they were excited about the prospect of
homeownership. Almost every day after his full-time job, Nicolas
continued his working day at the home site.
Rafael and Olga Angulo lived in a two-bedroom mobile home with
their two daughters, a son, and Olga's mother. After reading a flyer
at their children's school, Rafael and Olga applied for a Habitat for
Humanity home. Both happily worked their "sweat equity" on Saturdays,
knowing that their efforts would result in a new life for their
family.
Eva Mendez, a single mother, lived with her three daughters and
her mother in an apartment in Panorama City; cramped for space in
their two-bedroom apartment, one of the children slept in a closet.
Each Saturday, Eva worked on a home site to fulfill her dream--to have
a permanent home for her family.
The purpose of the PMI Foundation, a nonprofit organization
established by The PMI Group, Inc, (NYSE:PMI), is to foster the goal
of home ownership and provide access to affordable housing for under
served areas and populations. The PMI Foundation does this by
supporting national local organizations that create housing
opportunities and help revitalize neighborhoods in communities
throughout the United States and around the world. The PMI Foundation
has sponsored or co-sponsored thirty Habitat builds worldwide and
contributed to the funding of over sixty builds. The PMI Foundation is
located in Walnut Creek, CA.
