Dear Mr Tiemann

Many thanks for your email regarding an A Board on the public highway.  The council do licence A Boards within certain central areas of Brighton & Hove, but Clarendon Road does not fall within a licensed area.  However, A Boards that are not within the licensed area do have to comply with the same rules with regards to placement, size and quantity, so one of our Highway Enforcement Officers will inspect the site and take any appropriate action.  We have assigned our reference HEC 923 to your report and please do not hesitate to contact us for further information or assistance.

Kind Regards

The sign is currently lying on its side on the pavement.  Hopefully nobody will trip over it.

In the standing position, it of course obstructs the view of drivers and could constitute a hazard to pedestrians crossing at that corner who might not be seen behind it. Don't know who the police person is (not PCSO) that would deal with it as a traffic problem but one of you might know.  Copying in PCSO Freya Carter in any case along with Jason Hazzard.  Where exactly is this Hove car supermarket anyway.  I think the police should have a look, as the possible site of this 'supermarket' is not obvious.  In the street?  In the private car parking behind our blocks?  Where? In the Rentokil car park?  Where?

Perhaps there is a Hansel and Gretal string of these signs positioned in various places one leading to another!

The sign being chained to a street tree is an arboricultural issue too so copying in Rob Walker.

It may also be a matter for planning enforcement.  It is an absolute liberty.  It is attached to a cement base making it hard to remove but it probably has the same status as flyposting.

I have copied in two of the three Goldsmid cllrs.  Alex is away in Cameroon on a teacher-training posting for the next 6-7 weeks.  Perhaps one of the cllrs and/or the police can sort this.  It ain't legal; that is certain!

Dear All,

Could you please advise if these sorts of signs are permitted? This was put up a couple of days ago in the corner of Clarendon with Ellen. Please note that the sign has been chained and padlocked to the tree.

If this is not allowed, we should these people to get it removed. Who in the Council has the power to do so?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Ralph
