The five design principles should be used in every design project you work on. Each principle is an essential part of a design, but how they work together is the most critical thing to consider when trying to communicate a message to a specific audience. For a more in-depth look at the design principles, check out this article.

Contrast: Contrast can be created when you use two elements that are complete opposites, like a classic and contemporary font or cool and warm colours. Using it creates impact and emphasis in a design.

On the other hand, colour technical is a series of technical considerations about the application of colour in a finished design. These considerations alter depending on a number of things, like whether a design is digital or printed. Colour technical includes things like colour mixing (additive or subtractive), colour systems (RGB, CMYK, etc.) and colour gamut.

If you know something about writing music, you know how useful musical theories can be. If you are an intuitive type who never studied theories, you are likely to keep on writing the same kind of music forever. And, eventually you will feel like a one-trick pony.

Graphic design and music alike, if you rely solely on the emotional side of yourself, and never listen to your rational side, or vice versa, sooner or later your creative life will stagnate. You need both sides challenging one another in order for you to grow as a human being.

But there are also theories that serve no purpose for the clients. Many artists, architects, and designers use names of prestigious critical theorists and philosophers to substantiate their own work. This is a strategy that works well especially in fine arts. The idea here is to associate names like Derrida, Baudrillard, and Wittgenstein to your work so that it would appear deeper and more substantial than it actually is. You drop these names but you never explain why you think they are relevant to your work. You just hide behind the mystique of their ideas and your art. This is quite unfortunate since it reflects badly on these theorists. Derrida probably suffered the most from this phenomenon, where many people began dismissing his ideas based on the commercialized interpretations of his ideas.

I feel that if you are going to use their names, you should explain in logical terms (just as they do) why you are making the association. As long as you explain this, it is perfectly fine to misunderstand them, since your misunderstanding would be clear to the readers. But instead, many artists and designers drop these names, never explain anything, hide behind the mystique, benefit from the association, and spread disinformation and misunderstanding. This is certainly a bad use of theories.

Organize the information into hierarchical categories by imagining a design in your mind and letting your brain organize it. Then, use your graphic design to communicate this visual order based on this mental design.

Visual balance that is asymmetrical occurs when the visual weight is intentionally and thoughtfully imbalanced between the two sides. When this happens, you will typically use white space to balance out the other side of the graphic.

Unlike the usual meaning of space, space in design can mean something different. Space can be viewed as both negative space and positive space when it comes to graphic design. It is imperative to include both in your design. Each of these spaces works closely with the other, which can significantly affect the overall design or image you are creating. Positive space is defined as the area within which objects are placed. These spaces are always full, and they contain a variety of objects.

In other words, when we see a specific color, we take different actions, sometimes without even realizing it. There is no doubt that color is a fundamental aspect of design and dictates the mood of a design. The palette you choose should represent your brand and its tone, so be careful when choosing colors.

The same is true when you want to combine more than one element. Ensure you maintain the hierarchy when you prioritize any design sections. When maintained properly, it allows the brand to focus only on the priority elements of the design. Among its features are highlighting titles, important messages, focusing on images, and many others.

To help viewers identify where to begin looking, hierarchy creates visual organization in the design. You can arrange items such as headings, subheadings, and main content. The hierarchy in a design must be maintained in this way. It should be applied when combining different elements. Make sure to maintain the hierarchy of any design section you wish to prioritize.

If properly maintained, it offers the brand the ability to concentrate on its priority elements. In addition to highlighting titles, important messages, images, and symbols, it also highlights the visual elements.

Generally, alignment refers to aligning the design elements along the top, bottom, or sides of the design. There is no requirement that aligned elements are of the same type. Left-aligned elements are commonly placed along the left side of the layout. A group of photos of different sizes appears as a unit when aligned across the top or bottom.
