Not sure if this is the right group or not, but I've just opened a PAYG
account with Claranet (with aim of moving to 24/7 if all is OK) as part of
my search for a saner alternative to Tiscali. Can anyone comment on
Claranet's reliability, speed etc over time.

Cheers

Have used for 5 years. Still sticking with Clara, having sampled some
others. Nuff said?

I somewhat agree. Their customer service can be thoroughly awful but
they've never let me down technically and the service has for the most
part been reliable and fast and that's just about all I need from a
service.

Thanks for the comments folks - Tiscali operate on the basis that all
problems are the user's and the connections have this habit of just dying -
your modem tells you you are connected, but nothing actually happens.
Doesn't happen when I use other ISPs, but will Tiscali acknowledge it? have
a guess!

My wife (who likes to be independent of me) had serious problems with
the accounting methods of Tiscali and with their lack of any response to
letters. Now, even if Tiscali offered the best possible service at the
cheapest price, I would not use them.

I have been with Clara for a few years now, and my wife for about 6
months. They are certainly not perfect, but they do have staff who are
prepared to answer problems raised in news groups, and they will put any
accounting problems (of which I have only had experience of one minor
problem) right. I guess that like most ISP's they are at the mercy of
the big organisations, such as BT, and that therefore long connection
times and slow speeds once connected will occur from time to time.

I shall stay with Clara because, in my opinion, they are honest, they
try to provide a good service (and usually do), and they are staffed by
real people rather than robot computers. Possibly I should add that my
wife and I are both simple users (i.e. e-mail, some ftp, and internet).
We do not use Chat rooms, or play games, or do any thing else.

Hope this helps.

I've often read NG messages in the past and wondered how anyone could
possibly write such rubbish. Now I know!
