Claranet users may find the following information helpful:
I still have copies of some relevant documents from Claranet (and some
can still be found on their website). They suggested that a free
Giganews account would be for 1 year, but one document said for "at
least" a year.
In my case, my "Claranet Free" Giganews account was activated exactly
a year ago, on 6 May 2009. However, I have received no notice about
any expiry, and it still works for me. :-)
An e-mail from Claranet sent to subscribers on 27 April 2009 stated:
"The Claranet Usenet service will be decommissioned on or around 1
June 2009" (it actually happened somewhat later). It said: "Please
ensure that you have signed-up for the Giganews service prior to 1
June 2009". Perhaps this means that the free Giganews accounts will
all end one year from that date.
Does anyone know any better?

I'm still going strong, well over the 12 months now with no problems.
Could these be "famous last words"?
