Prior to the release of version 1.83 in February 2004, Audiograbber was shareware. The unregistered versions of the software only allowed a random selection of half the tracks of a given CD to be extracted in each ripping session. These limitations in the software were due to a restrictive clause in an agreement between the author and Xing Technology. After the agreement expired, the software was made available as freeware with no limitations on its function.
Version 1.83 (as well as the convenient Lame plugin installer on the same site) from the developer site comes bundled with several adware like Funmoods Toolbar, Conduit Search, Zapp, VO Package, Browser Utility, AnyProtect. One has to read the installation screens carefully and deselect everything that one does not want to install.

Audiograbber is not capable of "secure ripping", at least not up to the standards of other software designed with this in mind. Although Audiograbber generates track checksums, its method of doing so doesn't directly take read offsets into account; instead, it trims near-silence from the beginning and end of the track, a method that will work for tracks that begin and end with silence but not universally. Naturally, these checksums are not compatible with those generated by other software such as programs that use the AccurateRip database. For Audiograbber there is only a very tiny, unmaintained database of checksums to compare against, with no automated interface; it's just a list on the Audiograbber web site.
The 2020 Edition of Audiograbber 1.83 offers integrated MP3 functionality (no additional installation of the previous MP3 plugin is required anymore) as well as the retrieval of CD data via gnudb as a replacement for the now discontinued freedb.

Seit Version 1.80 bietet Audiograbber die Möglichkeit, direkt auf die herunterladbare Datenbank von freedb zuzugreifen. Wenn sie also nicht bei jeder neuen CD eine Verbindung ins Internet aufbauen wollen, können sie die komplette Datenbank von freedb herunterladen und offline darauf zugreifen.
Hinweis: wir weisen darauf hin, dass die herunterladbare Datenbank in vielen Fällen nicht so exakt arbeitet wie die bereits vorhandene Online-Variante! Ausserdem ist die Installation und die Aktualisierung dieser Datenbank relativ kompliziert und deshalb nur Experten empfohlen, die unbedingt eine Offline-Version der Datenbank benötigen. (Wichtig: sie benötigen unbedingt die Windows-Version der Datenbank ("freedb-win-... .7z ") im 7z-Format. Dieses Format können Sie mit dem kostenlosen Programm 7-Zip entpacken. Die Datei ist etwa 350 MB groß. Nach dem Entpacken nimmt die Datei gut 2 GB auf der Festplatte ein (Stand: Oktober 2006).
Um Datenbank in Audiograbber einzubinden, entpacken sie die heruntergeladene Datei mit dem Programm 7-Zip in ein Verzeichnis auf ihrer Festplatte (z.B. c:\audiograbber\freedb). Dann starten sie Audiograbber und wählen im Menü Optionen den Eintrag "Freedb-Einstellungen". Dort tragen Sie nun noch den Pfad zu der Datenbank in das entsprechende Feld ein. Wenn jetzt eine neue CD eingelegt wird, schaut Audiograbber automatisch in dieser Datenbank nach. Es muss dazu nicht der Freedb-Knopf gedrückt werden. Dieser Knopf dient ausschließlich dazu, CD-Infos über die Online-Datenbank abzufragen!
