Along with the road and metro rail construction in the city, the Mumbai-Delhi Motorway, the high-speed rail corridor, and the Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor are among other ongoing mega projects around India's financial capital.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced a call for proposals from civil contractors to undertake the construction of a crucial section of the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor. The corridor aims to connect Navghar on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Thane with Balavali in Raigad, spanning three districts: Palghar, Thane, and Raigad.

Originally conceived in 2011 as a 140km project to be executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Virar-Alibaug corridor was transferred to the MSRDC a few years ago. Subsequently, the length of the corridor was reduced by 14 km. In the coming weeks, the MSRDC plans to accept applications from infrastructure companies to advance the project to the next stage.

The entirely green field road project was also planned with a view to divert the heavy flow of cargo that exits from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and gets stuck in the internal roads of cities like Thane and Navi Mumbai. The Multi Modal corridor would also be connected to major national highways to ensure better connectivity for flow of goods to various parts of the country.

The 127-km Multi Modal Corridor from Alibaug to Virar will connect National Highway (NH)-8, Bhiwandi Bypass, NH-3, NH-4 and NH-4B, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and NH-17. Alignment-1 comprises a 98-km stretch of the corridor from Navghar to Balavali; Alignment-2 is 29 km long, connecting Balavali to Alibaug.

The 2014 Rail Budget presented by railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge did not mention the elevated corridor, drawing criticism from railway officials and commuters who had been following the project.[15] In April 2014, the Railway Board instructed WR to halt all work they had undertaken with regards to the project. Subodh Jain, member (engineering) of the Railway Board, stated, "The Oval Maidan-Virar elevated corridor has gone cold due to lack of interest by the state government." The Ministry of Railways shelved the project stating that until the government shows interest in the project, there was no need to carry out any work.[16] Following a change at the centre and a new Railway Minister, after the 2014 general elections, there was renewed interest in the project. Chairman of Railway Board Arunendra Kumar and the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra J. Saharia met on 14 June 2014 to discuss the future of the project.[17] On 8 January 2015, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu announced that the elevated corridor and the CST-Panvel corridor would be implemented.[18] According to a new proposal, a 6-lane road will be constructed on the same pier as the elevated rail corridors.[19]

In March 2015, the Railways suggested terminating the south-end of the line at Andheri, in response to the Maharashtra Government's concern that extending the line to Oval Maidan or Churchgate would be complicated. Due to space constraints in South Mumbai, the southern section of the line was planned to be underground from Oval Maidan to Mahalaxmi. However, the proposed Line 3 of the Mumbai Metro would pass through the same area, requiring the construction of a tunnel at greater depth for the WR corridor. The presence of several listed heritage buildings in the area also made the task more difficult.[20] On 5 May 2015, DNA reported that an announcement to scrap the project was expected to come soon. The paper quoted a senior railway official as stating that the project "still remained in limbo as the state and the railways couldn't sign the State Support Agreement since May 2012."[21]

It will consist of a 63.27 km two-track elevated corridor running above the existing Western Line, occasionally going underground and at ground level. The elevated sections will be 15 to 20 m above the ground, and higher at Andheri in order to clear the new Mumbai Metro station.[26] The corridor was initially proposed to go underground for 8.04 km from Oval Maidan to Mahalaxmi. Between Mahalaxmi and Borivali, the line will be elevated for 25.22 km and then at grade for 2.20 km. In the final stretch, between Borivali and Virar, 17.50 km would be elevated and 10.31 km would be at grade. Approximately, 42.72 km of the corridor was to be elevated, 8.04 km would be underground and the remaining 12.52 km at grade.[27]

According to an article published by Times Now, the MSRDC is currently inviting proposals from contractors to undertake the construction of the 96.41-kilometre stretch of the multi-modal corridor. This project will have a combination of highway as well as metro connectivity.

To support an economy of this size and scale, the state is in the middle of a massive infrastructure development journey implementing a slew of transformational expressways, multimodal corridors, metro systems, coastal roads and other projects.

The Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor (VAMMC) Project has officially awarded its construction contract to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The Rs 60,000 crore project features a 126-kilometre-long route. Moreover, the road will include an eight-lane expressway. Additionally, it will connect to several crucial locations such as Uran, Ambernath, Bhiwandi, Vasai, Pen, and Panvel.

Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor Within the 126-kilometre Virar-Alibaug-Multi-Modal Corridor, the Maharastra State Road Development Corporation has asked for bids from construction companies to develop a segment totaling 96.41 km. The goal of this corridor is to link Balavali in Raigad with Navghar on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Thane. It will incorporate both a highway and a metro network. It will pass through the districts of Palghar, Thane, and Raigad.

The corridor is slat to become operational in two phases, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The first phase will cover 79 km, from Navghar to Chirner, in close proximity to the JNPT. The initial phase is anticipate to cost Rs 10,000 crore. The second section, which runs from Chirner to Alibaug, will be around 47 kilometres long.

The first project, the Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor (VAMMC), is a 100km long route that will feature an eight-lane expressway. This corridor, equipped with provisions for future Metro rail connectivity, will connect various important locations such as Vasai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambernath, Panvel, Uran, and Pen.

Mumbai: The State Board for Wildlife (SBW) at its Wednesday meeting deferred to the next meeting a decision on the Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor proposed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The project, proposed to run parallel to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, has sought nearly 14.8 hectare of the national park. However, environmentalists have raised concerns over the possibility of animals in the SGNP increasingly meeting with accidents due to project.
