I pushed out an update for silverlight yesterday, and a group is complaining it broke their app. So need to remove the current version of SL and install the previous one. I indexed the pkg and told casper to remove it, however, when I try to push the old version down it returns an error:

So I had this issue a while back and solved it by including a command in advanced or Files and Processes to search for file by path /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/PlayReady/mspr.hds then checking the checkbox to remove if found.

So, sometimes I try to figure this out by composing an installation of something I want to remove, just to see what it puts where. If nothing else, you can do like you did and build an uninstaller script based on that knowledge.

Hi, here in the UK Virgin Media is one of the main TV providers. And their web streaming service uses Silverlight (which is a safari extension). But after updating to Safari 12.0 the extension seems to have gone and after repeatedly reinstalling it seems to not be appearing. Does anyone know a work around for this as the "run in safe mode" option is no longer available in 12.0 (Microsoft Article)?

I have this issue as well. I've been trying to downgrade back to 11.1.2 to restore the functionality but so far have not been successful. I've got 11.1.2 running, but I can't get into preferences nor can I expand my safari window past a certain point horizontally anymore to make it take up more of the screen.

Our PACS (medical imaging viewing software) used Silverlight on the desktops (native iPad app on the iPads) and Safari 12.0 has removed support for Silverlight. Strangely, Adobe Flash seems to be unaffected.

I suspect the issue stems from this item that isn't seen unless you expand the Safari 12.0 update in the app store: "Improves security by discontinuing support for most NPAPI plugins". I'd wager that Microsoft Silverlight is an NPAPI plugin which explains why it no longer works.

After a bunch of work in the recovery console I was able to get 11.1.2 back up and running which restored Silverlight. However, I now get a frequent crash popup for "SafariBookmarksSyncAgent" quitting unexpectedly. While annoying, I don't use safari bookmarks, no less require them to be synchronized anywhere so I'll just move that popup window into the bottom corner of my screen and ignore it after each reboot. Super annoying, but at least I got the plugin back for now.

I've also reported this issue and thread to Apple's senior advisors in the hopes they can get some engineering eyeballs on it. However, I suspect they are going to say this is now Microsoft's responsibility to update Silverlight to not be an NPAPI plugin.

Please stop spreading incorrect information. First of all, the latest version of High Sierra is 10.13.6, not 10.13.1. And second of all, Safari version 12.0 has removed support for NPAPI plugins. This means Microsoft Silverlight will not work regardless of what version of macOS you are running so long as you are running Safari version 12.0 or greater.

Again, please stop spreading incorrect information. Safari version 12.0 has removed support for NPAPI plugins. This means Microsoft Silverlight will not work regardless of what version of macOS you are running so long as you are running Safari version 12.0 or greater.

Silverlight was also used by Amazon Video and Netflix for their instant video streaming services, but Netflix said in its Tech Blog in 2013 that, since Microsoft had announced Silverlight's end-of-life, they would be moving to HTML5 video.

Chrome & Firefox have both dropped support for Silverlight. Strange that it has worked in Safari for so long, and that Netflix et al haven't already moved on. I get a weird error code trying to access Netflix in Safari 12 here, plus references to HDCP, but it works perfectly in Chrome on the same machine. ?

I spoke with both Apple & Netflix last night. Apple says they gave Netflix & Microsoft plenty of time during the beta period to figure out how to make things work. Netflix says to use another browser. It seems few people, including Netflix support, realizes that Chrome & Firefox stream Netflix at 720p - Safari was the only way to get 1080p.

I found the answer to my HTML5 issue. Since Silverlight is a blocked plugin, the browser should default to HTML5, but it does not. The reason, as I've figured out, is that Apple uses the hardware API, so h.264 video decoding is done in hardware (the CPU), rather than software. Chrome & Firefox use the software API, so video decoding is done in software. Well, lucky me, still hanging onto my old 2010 Mac Pro with Westmere XEON's, which don't have h.264 decoding in the CPU. This was introduced in 2011's Sandy Bridge architecture. SO, if you have anything older than 2011-2012, no HTML5 Netflix decoding.

UPDATE: I just realised that the communities page I was looking at did not show me all replies, just the "most helpful" and at on September 18th onc_photo had already suggested this work around! I wish I noticed that earlier as it would have saved me an hour or so... !

I wish to use Web UI Builder for my application. To use this I have to install the Microsoft silverlight. I downloaded it and I installed it. But, in this website , if I am clicking on the "Try it Now" tab, again, it was asking about the "Install the Microsoft Silverlight". When I am checking into my program files, I have seen that Silverlight program has been installed already. So, What is the reason I couldn't enter to Web UI Builder. Could You anyone guide me.......

There's currently a workaround listed on that page (a way to re-enable Silverlight in Chrome), but eventually that option will go away (in future versions of Chrome), so Internet Explorer is probably the best bet.

Hypothetically, If e.g. Host A has been last scanned 4 days ago, Microsoft Silverlight has been patched 2 days ago, and you have scanned Host B today, you'd see Host A displaying the last-known state before the patching, while Host B would have had detected that the application was patched due to the scan occurring after patching it.

This is essentially why frequent scanning is so important - it ensures timely updating of all vulnerability intelligence that flows into your database and thereby gets picked by Agents on the network.

Please check this particular scenario and drop me a comment if that wasn't the case. Make sure you compiled Host and Product smart groups before looking at the data because that may also be the issue - Smart Groups haven't been compiled hence displaying old known states while Completed Scans showing "the server-side" matching of the detection - hence yielding a different result - a compilation of Smart Groups should fix that.

I hope this helps.

Hi @davidle,

Thanks for verifying the basics so promptly. So far we have it confirmed that some of your systems failed to return information for missing KBs for the Silverlight product, while others did return this information to the SVM Agent successfully. We shall understand what caused some systems do not deliver the information - was that because they have nothing pending, or was it because of WU problems?

Please run the following in Powershell on 1-2 systems that have been identified to have Secure Silverlight version, and run the same query on 1-2 other client systems that have been identified to have Insecure one:

b) The 1-2 systems that show this product as "Insecure" in SVM should show Silverlight patches as "Missing".

Was this the outcome?

PS: I made a quick edit to improve the query after I've caught that the first one wouldn't have been ideal.

I don't recall any of our software ever requiring Silverlight, and I wouldn't expect any problems if you removed it. I'd be curious about what led them to the conclusion that it was installed as part of a Laserfiche product - it is possible that we install an unnecessary component.

I recently had a customer ask something similar. Turned out they had deployed Silverlight with some of their older standard Windows Server images - ones their Laserfiche system was installed on. We told them there certainly weren't any Laserfiche 11 components that required it and highly unlikely that any prior versions did either. Didn't hear about any issues post Silverlight removal.

I went to -in/windows-10/about in both browsers. In Chrome I could see the content on the webpage perfectly. In Firefox it asked me to install Microsoft Silverlight. I'm surprised that on Chrome it didn't ask me to install Silverlight.

From what I gather, pipelight runs silverlight using wine in the background somehow but this not only works, it works better than silverlight does in Windows and installs as a plugin to your linux browser (not a wine workaround). Tested on netflix and the timewarner cable tv app.

Ever since Firefox updated to 17.0.1, the flash and silverlight plugins just disappeared. I tried to clean installing the flash player, it did not work. I tried clean installing an earlier version of flash player, that did not work either. The plugin manager is less than useless as it says the plugin has been successfully installed yet I cannot use Netflix nor any flash video. I did all of the above once again with all plugins and addons disabled, and still nothing happened.
