The following is an open letter that I submitted on the Trader Joe's website

As President of the Clairemont Town Council, I can't tell you the number of times I get asked by folks, "When can we get a Trader Joe's in Clairemont?"

We're the largest community within the City of San Diego with about 80,000 residents, so there is definitely a customer base to support one. There are locations in Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Point Loma, Mission Valley, and Hillcrest that are all at least reasonable driving distance away. However, coupled with traffic, time to and from the store, we feel your company -- and our community -- could best benefit from having a Trader Joe's in Clairemont.

I had heard that as a general company policy that you don't put a Trader Joe's location within 5 miles of another store, however, as I mentioned the Mission Valley store (which did open recently) is less than 5 miles from your location in Hillcrest.

If you've reversed this policy, or are open to discussion about opening a store in Clairemont, please let us know. We'd love to open a dialog and see what some options are for a possible store in our Clairemont community.

Hey Joel, not a problem. I had thought about that new Mission valley store opening and thought, "hey, that's less than 5 miles from Hillcrest!"

So, we'll see what happens! Fingers crossed :-)
