I wanted to know if anyone knew what was going to be built on the corner of Balboa and Genesee ? It has been vacant so many years and recently looked like there was progress but now construction apparently has stopped. Also what is going into the old Blockbuster building on Balboa ave?

Hi Birdie,

As far as I know the corner where Marie Callendar's used to be has a redevelopment plan that was put together several years ago-- some store/restaurants etc. I don't have any inside info, but I would bet that it's an issue of financing. Seems like that's an issue for a lot of shopping center developers-- look at the one at the bottom of Clairemont Dr. next to Best Western.

As for the Blockbuster building, I have no idea. Did you see that the Ralphs at that intersection was closing next week? That might have an effect on opportunities to lease that Blockbuster store, since Home Depot will take over the Ralphs space.

So back in February when Birdie first asked about this, I had no idea we would get Panera Bread in the old Blockbuster store. How's everybody liking the place?

We need a Trader Joe's!  I wish it was going in there on the corner or the old 24 hour Fitness building.  :)

Hi, This shopping center was recently purchased and it sounds like some cool new improvements are in the works. However, part of the developer's proposal also includes removing the protective neighborhood zoning in part of the shopping center. THAT part is not good for the neighborhood and I hope others will learn more at CareAboutClairemont.com and sign the online petition....YES to redevelopment, NO to rezoning! PS - I was told by a neighbor that that corner had to sit empty for years because of some environmental law (I guess there used to be a gas station there?) I'm wondering if that, combined with economic downtown, was what kept the old owners from going ahead with redevelopment. New owners purchased the property last year.

How about the corner of Clairemont and Balboa with the fenced off former Smog shop? Worst corner in 92117.
