* Daily Turkiye reported that the International Labor Organization
research shows Turkish people as being the second most hardworking in
the World. According to the report by the International Labor
organization, nearly 90% of Turkish men work for more than 40 hours a
week. This percentage is almost 80% for women. According to the same report, the Czech
Republic has the hardest working people in the World.
* Daily Hurriyet reports that the three pro-Kurdish People's Democracy
Party mayors of Diyarbakir, Bitlis and Siirt were released from prison
by the Diyarbakir State Security Court on Monday. The mayors were
detained last week.
Feridun Celik, Selim Ozalp and Feyzullah Karaaslan will still stand
trial on charges of aiding and abetting the separatist Kurdish Workers
Party. The court also ruled to prohibit the mayors from travelling
abroad until the end of their trials.
After their release, Turkey's Interior Minister also permitted them
to return to their posts.
* The Turkish Government has recovered the "Gold Koran" stolen from the
Istanbul's Nuruosmaniye Library in 1920s. The Koran is worth about two
million dollars.
Turkey's Minister of Culture Istemihan Talay received the stolen
Koran from the President of the Johns Hopkins University William Brody
at a ceremony held in the Turkish Embassy in Washington.
The stolen first volume of the "Gold Koran" dates back to the 11th
century and was donated to Johns Hopkins University by a collector named
John Garret in 1942. The second volume of the Koran is still at the
Nuruosmaniye Library, reported the Daily Hurriyet.
* Following the high profits made by the US Internet companies on the
stock exchanges, Turkish Internet companies rolled up their sleeves to
offer their shares to the public, as Daily Milliyet reports.
Among these Turkish Internet companies are Ixir, Ihlas.net and
Vestel.net. The General Director of Ixir Babur Ozden said that they
were planning to offer their shares to the public within 14 months in
order to strengthen the company. Ozden pointed out that it would also
be attractive for the Turkish Internet companies to list their stocks
in foreign stock exchanges.
The General Director of Ihlas.net Salih Kardas said that they were
also planning to offer their shares to the public within the year. He
added that Internet companies would make a positively effect on the
Istanbul Stock Exchange and would increase importance of technology
shares in both foreign countries and Turkey.
* As part of the draft law adopted by the Planning and Budgetary
Commission of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the traditional and
original Turkish beverage raki will be registered by the European
Union.
This draft law will bring new regulations in the fields of
production, export and distribution, reports the Turkish daily Aksam.
* Daily Milliyet reports that Turkey's Council of Ministers has given
its final consent to the building of the Akkuyu nuclear power station.
The project had previously been postponed four times.
The Turkish Electricity Joint Stock Company will negotiate with those
firms participating in the bidding for the tender within 10 days. The
three consortiums bidding for the venture are as follows: Westinghouse-
Mitsubishi (US-Japan), AECL (Canada) and NPI (Germany-France).
Council of Ministers also decided that the firm winning the bidding
would be selected entirely on technical merit. Turkey's prime minister
Mr. Bulent Ecevit said, "Our relations with those countries which are
competing for the tender are very good. Therefore, it would not be
right to utilize political criteria. The selection will be made by
experts from the relevant institutions".
* Last Thursday, in crackdowns against the Kurdish Workers Party in
Mardin and Sirnak in southeastern Turkey, Turkish security forces
killed six terrorists and seized their weapons.
During one of the clashes three members of the Turkish security
forces died. President Suleyman Demirel, Speaker of the Grand National
Assembly of Turkey Yildirim Akbulut and Premier Bulent Ecevit sent
their condolences to Chief of General Staff General Huseyin Kivrikoglu.
* Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit visited Albania on Monday and Tuesday.
Daily Milliyet reported that Mr. Ecevit met with Albanian
President Recep Meydani, Parliament Chairman, Iskender Gjinushi, Prime
Minister Ilir Meta and Albanian political party leaders. He also held a
joint press conference and met businessmen. During this visit, which is
the first one that has been paid for eight years on a prime ministerial
level, the two sides discussed the possible ways to improve relations
between the two countries.

UEFA (Union of the European Soccer Associations) Cup Fourth Round
Turkey's Galatasaray soccer team has added to its triumphs in Europe. In the
UEFA Cup's Fourth Round, Galatasaray beat Borussia Dortmund in Germany,
thanks to goals from Hakan Sukur and Hagi. The score was 2-0, a big
advantage before the second leg of the match, which will be played in
Istanbul on March 9.

* 133 historic artifacts, which were smuggled unsuccessfully from
Turkey in 1997 and brought to the U.S. where they were seized by
American and Turkish police in Customs at Oklahoma, will be given back
to Turkey. The document recording the return of these pieces was signed
by Turkey's General Director of Monuments and Museums, Alpay Pasinli
this week in Washington.
The Turkish Minister of Culture, Istemihan Talay, the Deputy
Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Sencer Ozsoy, the Turkish Ambassador
to Washington, Baki Ilkin, the U.S. Deputy Undersecretary of State,
Evelyn Lieberman, Deputy Secretary of State Marc Grossman, the U.S.
Deputy Director of Customs, Bonni Tischler, and officials from the
American State Department's Turkish bureau attended the signing
ceremony held in the US State Department's Agreements Hall.
* "Palace of Gold and Light: Topkapi Treasures" exhibition which will
be displayed at three different museums in the U.S. this year opened in
the famous Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.
The exhibition consisting of 200 pieces belonging to the Ottoman
era will stay open at Corcoran Museum until June 15.

* Well-known and liked Turkish singer Ozay Gonlum has died.
* The World Bank announced an essay competition titled "Turkey 21st
Century Development Prize" in cooperation with Turkey's Middle East
Technical University and Istanbul Chamber of Industry.
The essay competition will be open to university students aged 25 and
under of Turkish nationality. The objective is to encourage young
university students to think about new ideas and to meet the
development challenges for Turkey.
