NEWS BRIEFS

Edited for the Turkish Radio Hour by Arzu ozkan

* Daily Turkiye reports that the Committee of Permanent
Representatives of the Member States at the European Union is
taking up Turkey's Accession Partnership Document at their next
meeting.
Term President France is opposing the inclusion of the Aegean
territorial dispute between Greece and Turkey in the mid-term
targets session.
European Union countries other than Greece say the issue is not
a concern for the European Union, but should be solved by the two
countries themselves.
Sweden, which takes the term presidency from France next month,
also believes including the statement related to the Cyprus issue
was enough.
Most European countries thinks that stating the inclusion of
the Aegean issue in the Accession Partnership Document leads to
inequality. These countries are emphasizing that border disputes
are in the scope of bilateral relations.

* The European Union will male its decision on accepting Turkey
as a member during a meeting on December 4. Before the European
Union decision on Turkey's membership to the Union, the US
expressed support for Turkey.
The State Department Spokesman, Richard Boucher, said, "We
have always supported Turkey's European Union membership.
"Regarding the case, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright,
met both with Turkish foreign affairs Minister Ismail Cem and
Greek foreign affairs Minister George Papandreou during the OSCE
summit in Vienna.
"Furthermore, the US administration, Turkish diplomats in
Europe and representatives of other Turkish organizations have
been in continuous contact with their counterparts to ensure
Turkey's European Union membership."
This report was dispatched by Daily Turkiye.

* Turkey's National Security Council held its monthly meeting on
Wednesday last week.
Headed by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the Council discussed
internal security, external developments and alternative energy
sources at the meeting.

* Daily Star reports that the European Union Turkey
representative Ambassador Karen Fogg as saying, "The Turkish
economy could compete with the economies of the developed
countries if, and only if, it maintains an equilibrium in
developing education and health investments which should be
carried out all over the country."
Stating the European Union's financial aid programs for Turkey
concentrated on East and Southeast regions of Turkey, Fogg said:
"The European Union had already given Euro 120 million aid to
Turkey for compulsory education.
"Another program totaling Euro 55 million will be used in the
Southeast region."

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS

* According to a report from the daily Milliyet, the European
Union will propose Turkey put into effect again the regulations
related to "duty free imports" at the Joint Committee meeting of
the Customs Union.
The European Commission will propose the free circulation of
second-hand industrial goods, especially motorized vehicles.

* According to daily Milliyet, World Bank Turkey Director Ajay
Chhibber said the World Bank will provide Turkey with a $1
billion loan by year's end. The IMF will also give $600 million
in credits, together with the $400 million World Bank loans.

* Turkish daily News reports that Turkey's State Minister
responsible for the Economy Recep Onal called on Japanese
businessmen to invest in Turkey. On Wednesday, Mr. Onal told
businessmen at the 12th Turkish-Japanese Business Council meeting
in Tokyo that Turkey was a powerhouse in Southeastern Europe with
its 65 million people, $200 billion gross national product and
its fast-growing economy.

* Daily Turkiye reports that the Turkish government awarded the
bid to supply AWACS type of aircraft to the Boeing Co.
The deal is worth $1.5 billion

ARTS AND CULTURE

Edited for the Turkish radio hour by Gamze Seckin

* Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Konya Culture Tourism
Association will jointly organize the International Mevlana
Information Festival on December 15-17 in Ankara.
23 scholars from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, India, the
United States, Pakistan, Iran, Britain, Italy, Kosovo, the
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Hungary, Sweden, the
Netherlands, Germany and Egypt will attend the event along with
24 scholars from Turkey.
The participants will also be invited to the Sheb-i Aruz
ceremonies in Konya on December 17. The Shebi Aruz ceremonies
commemorate the death of Mevlana.
Mevlana who is also known as Rumi, was a philosopher and mystic
of Islam, but not a Moslem of the orthodox type. His doctrine
advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness,
charity and awareness through love. To him and his disciples all
religions are more or less truth. Looking with the same eye on
Moslem, Jew and Christian alike, his peaceful and tolerant
teaching has appealed to men of all sects and creeds.
Mevlana was born on September 30, 1207 in Balkh in present day
Afghanistan. He died in Konya, Turkey on December 17, 1273.
His followers are organized around the Mevlevi order. The 13th
century Mevlana Mausoleum with its mosque, dance hall, dervish
living quarters, school and tombs of some leaders of the Mevlevi
Order continues to this day to draw pilgrims from all parts of
the Moslem and non-Moslem world.

* According to daily Hurriyet, the Brussels' correspondent of the
Hurriyet Newspaper Zeynel Lule received The Konstantinos Kalligas
Award from the Greek department of the Association of European
Journalists.

Directorate General of Youth and Sports and Youth Services
Center, will be held in Ankara between December 2-8.

Turkey will participate in the festival.

during the festival.
The European Youth Festival aims at bringing European and
Turkish youth organizations together and establishing a
foundation of cooperation between the participants.

Council of International Schools for its superior quality of
education according to European standards.
Eyuboglu High School's director Ms. Sema Kan Ozkaya traveled to
Nice, France to receive the award.
Ms. Ozkaya said, "Our school is one of three high schools
accredited worldwide. We are happy the success of our school was
recognized by a well-acclaimed institution."
The high school has a web site at:
http://www.eyuboglu.com/e/index.html

* Yusuf Islam whose name was Cat Stevens before adopting Islam as
his religion, is visiting Turkey's southeastern SanlIurfa
province.
People in SanlIurfa are very interested in his new music.

* According to daily Cumhuriyet, historic objects such as jewelry
and sculpture are being exhibited in the Worcester Museum of
Massachusetts in the US. These artifacts were unearthed by
American archaeologists before the annexation of Hatay to the
Republic of Turkey. The exhibition is titled "Antakya: The Lost
Ancient City".
Most of the ancient works are being exhibited for the first
time in 75 years. The exhibition will open in Cleveland and
