NEWS BRIEFS

Edited for The Turkish Radio Hour by Arzu Ozkan

* Turkish security forces in the northwestern province of Edirne have
detained 99 illegals bound for Greece over a period of three days,
Anatolia News Agency reported on Monday. The detainees included 98 illegal
immigrants from Afghanistan, Albania, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Nigeria, the
Palestinian territories, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria and Tunisia, the
agency said. Security forces also caught a Briton, who said he planned to
pass the Turco-Greek border illegally because he had lost his passport.
Turkey is one of the main routes for poor Asian and African immigrants
trying to illegally reach Europe in search of a better life.

* Turkey's Islamist Virtue Party started lobbying to change Article 312 of
the Turkish Penal Code to save the one-time prime minister Mr. Necmettin
Erbakan, Daily Sabah reports.
Mr. Necmettin Erbakan has been the leader of previous Islamist parties
in Turkey until he was virtually banned from politics a few years ago.
The second blow to Mr. Erbakan's political ambitions came last week,
when a court sentenced him to one-year imprisonment for a speech he made
six years ago.
The prosecution alleged that he had tried to incite hatred by
emphasizing religious differences.
Article 312 prohibits the incitement of hatred based on religious, class
or ethnic differences. Turkey's Islamists are hoping to have article 312
watered down and Mr. Erbakan's conviction overturned.
To achieve this, Virtue Party is leaning towards extending support to
increasing presidential term to two five-year terms, which will keep the
current president Mr. Suleyman Demirel in office.
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said he was not against amendment of
Article 312, yet noted that this could not happen before the debate on
extending the term of the president ends.

* Anatolian News Agency reported that Turkey and the World Bank have
agreed on two 750-million-dollar loan packages aimed at boosting a
government program of comprehensive economic reforms. The World Bank
executive committee will review it on April 11 for final approval.
The money will be released to support structural reforms in public
expenditure management, agriculture, energy, social security and
privatization.

* Daily Zaman reports that the Istanbul Stock Exchange and Istanbul Gold
Exchange recessed due to the national holiday of Eid El-Ahda (the Feast of
Sacrifice) on Monday. No shares were bought or sold at the Istanbul Stock
Exchange and also in Istanbul Gold Exchange on 13, 14, and 15 March due to
administrative leave given before the holiday.
The Istanbul Stock Exchange and Istanbul Gold Exchange will restart
trading on March 20 after the national holiday.

* The question is whether to cut their throats or not. Maybe find a tidier
way of disposing them. And there are a million awaiting slaughter. It's
causing heated debate in Turkey, anxious to improve its image
internationally as it applies to join the European Union, according to
Anatolian Agency report.
The victims are mainly sheep, although sometimes a calf or even a camel
may fall to the knife. Eid el Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, an
important date in the Muslim calendar, fell on Thursday. And Turkey is 99
percent Muslim.
Critics call the rite bloody and barbarous, while traditionalists remind
you it dates back more than 1,400 years. The public is divided over
whether to go for cleaner, tidier and less violent ways of ending the
animals' lives.
Eid el Adha celebrates the gesture of the prophet Ibrahim - Abraham of
the Jewish scriptures - who after a dream in which he was on the point of
sacrificing his son Ismail for love of God, awoke and cut the throat of a
sheep instead.
The tradition has implications for modern Turkish politics. Turkey, only
recently accepted by the European Union as an official candidate for
membership, fears that European eyes which may not look with approval on
such practices.

* Daily Sabah reported that Turkey's State Water Works Regional
Directorate plans to set up 31 hydroelectric power stations in the Eastern
Black Sea region within 20 years. Nine power stations will be set up in
Artvin province, seven in Giresun, six in Trabzon, five in Rize, and four
hydroelectric power plants will be set up in Gumushane.
According to the Directorate, the power stations will produce 15.2
billion kilowatt/hours of energy. This will meet 11 percent of Turkey's
energy needs.

* According to a Daily Cumhuriyet report, DupontSa, a joint venture
between Turkey's Sabanci Holding and Dupont will start in the U.S.
The joint venture was established to produce raw materials of fibers,
polyester, and thread for European market.
Company official Omer Sabanci said DupontSa will sell $350 million of
products to Turkey, $450 million to all of Europe and $150-280 million to
other countries.

* Daily Sabah reports that a project, supported by the United Nations
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will be
undertaken to stress the unique characteristics of Turkey's Aegean Mugla
province.
The project will aim at preserving the historical and urban structure of
the city. Dr. Tayfun Taner, Chairman of Dokuzeylul University Architecture
and City Planning Department, told the Anatolian agency correspondent that
20 scientists have been working on the project. Dr. Taner said Mugla
architecture has an important place in the world, adding that UNESCO
supported the project because of this.

* According to Daily Hurriyet, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Vefik Alp, an architect and
the chief consultant to Turkey's Premier Bulent Ecevit, prepared a
60-kilometer bridge project between Turkey and Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus. Dr. Alp plans to construct half of this bridge on
pontoons and half of it as a tube tunnel. Thus, the cars will drive from
southern Anamur township in Turkey to Girne province in Cyprus in 45
minutes.
Dr. Alp says that the Greek Cypriots should also be involved in the
project and benefit from the increased number of tourists arriving on the
island.

* Meanwhile, in the Greek controlled southern Cyprus, around 50 Greeks and
Turks fought a pitched battle, attacking each other with bricks and clubs.
The Greek Cypriots have accused the new arrived Turks being agents of the
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus sent there to destabilize the economy.
In a commentary on the matter, Turkish Cypriots television Bayrak said
that the event shows that the Turks on the island cannot trust the Greeks
yet.

SPORTS NEW

Edited for the Turkish Radio Hour by Mark Nowak

* Galatasaray thrashed Real Mallorca 4-1 in front of a stunned home crowd
on the Spanish island on Thursday, virtually guaranteeing the Turkish
champions a place in the UEFA Cup semifinals. After a neat exchange of
passes, Arif Erdem lobbed Mallorca keeper Leo Franco from the edge of the
box to give the Turks the lead after 44 minutes. Galatasary made it 2-0
shortly after the re-start when Emre Belozoglu skilfully controlled a high
ball and, with the Mallorca defence watching, turned and sent a perfect
chip over Franco who was only slightly off his line. Driven on by their
vociferous supporters, Galatasary extended their lead after 58 minutes
when Mallorca's defence failed to cut out a long ball and Hakan Sukur ran
on to score. Mallorca, last season's beaten finalists in the European Cup
Winners Cup, looked shattered as Okan Buruk rounded Franco to make it four
after a neat pass from Erdem seven minutes later. In the last round
Galatasaray beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in Germany then shut-up shop in the
goalless second leg. They should have little difficulty securing the
result they need next Thursday to take them into a European semi for only
the second time.
