NEWS BRIEFS

Edited for the Turkish Radio Hour by Arzu Ozkan

* Agence France-Presse reported that earlier last week Turkey's
prime minister Mr. Bulent Ecevit hailed the election victory of
the Iranian reformists and expressed hope that Tehran would now
give up its support for hard-line Islamic movements in other
countries. Mr. Ecevit defined the victory of Iranian reformists
as "a new era" and expressed hope it would be beneficial not only
for Iran, but for the whole Muslim world and Turkey.
However, Bulent Ecevit's comments were shortly followed by
Iran's official protest Iranian Deputy Foreign affairs minister
Mohsen Aminzadeh summoned Turkish ambassador Mr. Turan Murali and
told him Mr. Ecevit's remarks were "a clear example of
interference in the domestic affairs, and an affront to the
Iranian people and the Islamic republic," the official IRNA news
agency said.

* Sabah reports that the Congress of the World Turks will be held
in Samsun on March 24. Representatives of almost all the Turkish-
speaking Countries in Central Asia will attend the Congress. The
Mongols, who fought against Turks in the past, are also expected
to be present at the Congress. Turkey's President Suleyman
Demirel, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, chairman of the
Nationalist Action Party and Deputy Prime Minister Devlet
Bahceli, many ministers and political party leaders are also
invited to the Congress. The three-day Congress will be organized
by the Foundation of the Turkish-Speaking States and Communities.

* Milliyet Newspaper reports that 104 Chechens who fled Russian
attacks in Chechnya have been waiting on the Turkish border
trying to enter this country for several days now. The Chechen
group mainly consisting of women and children arrived in the
Ahalkalaki region of Georgia 10 days ago. However, since the
refugees do not have passports, they have not been able to enter
Turkey. The governor of Ardahan province of Turkey Mr. Ayhan
Nasuhbeyoglu said that they had sent clothes, dry food and 75
blankets to the Chechens waiting on the border between Turkey and
Georgia.

* The Head of the Istanbul Directorate of Security Mr. Hasan
Ozdemir said that Turks can now apply for their passports via the
Internet, daily Sabah reported. The address of the Web page is
http://www.iem.gov.tr.
He added that those whose births were registered in Istanbul
will be able to receive their passports in two working days
whereas those whose births were registered outside Istanbul would
be able to obtain their passports in four working days.

* Daily Cumhuriyet reports that a new Turkish customs regulation
will allow Turkish citizens who have been living abroad for at
least two years to import their cars to Turkey without paying any
customs duty. Cars have to be not more than three years old.
Previous regulations required the payment of up to 150 percent
customs duty.

* Daily Milliyet reported that the Turkish government renewed the
main status of Turkey's Directorate General of Postal Services
and expanded its role. It also took on the name "Post and
Telegraph Organization".
According to its new status, the capital funding of the
institution has been increased from 200 billion TL to 40 trillion
TL.
As part of the reorganization, Turkish post office branches
will now be able to sell foreign currency and trade in shares.

* Agence France-Presse reported owned Friday that a state
security court in Turkey formally charged three Kurdish mayors in
southeastern Turkey with aiding Kurdish rebels early Thursday.
Feridun Celik of Diyarbakir, Selim Ozalp of Siirt and Feyzullah
Karaaslan of Bingol and were accused of taking orders from the
outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party and helping fund the rebel
group.
The mayors are members of the pro-Kurdish People's Democracy
Party and their detention has provoked daily demonstrations
mainly in Diyarbakir in Kurdish-populated southeast.
The case has also sparked protests from European Union states,
and the Council of Europe chided Turkey for "imprisoning elected
leaders".
Portugal, which holds the European Union presidency, announced
Tuesday that member countries were discussing the case and would
issue a joint statement.
Another Friday news dispatch by Agence France-Presse reported
that the three mayors plus the mayor of Agri were removed from
their posts.
In a related development, Turkish authorities handed down
heavy prison sentences to the leaders of the People's Democracy
Party for aiding and abetting the Kurdish insurgents.

* Daily Aksam reports that Turkey's Ministry of Interior will put
finger prints on the back of identity cards to expedite the
identification of individuals who die during natural disasters or
in traffic accidents.
