My name is Joe Zaycosky and I am currently a junior at The Ohio State University. I’m in the process of planning a statewide day of collegiate community service and I’m wondering if you and the members of Circle K would be interested in participating. It’s pretty simple; all I ask is members of Circle K spend at least one hour picking trash in areas surrounding Findlay’s campus on Saturday, April 9, 2011. I realize this may seem like a somewhat strange and random request but allow me explain my motivations for creating and organizing what I’ve started to call the Ohio Day of Service.
Our country currently faces a number of monumental challenges. A majority of these issues are not new, but rather, have been avoided, neglected, and ignored to the point where it looks like our generation, as we now start to enter the workforce and begin our adult lives, are finally going to be the ones who are stuck dealing with them. Liberal or conservative, the solutions to the problems concerning our deficit, healthcare system, energy policy, immigration laws, national security, poverty, and education system are most likely going to entail all us having to do some things that aren’t very fun and that we’d rather not do; for example, paying higher taxes or making due with fewer benefits to get our state and national deficits under control.
The Ohio Day of Service is an experiment. It’s a test to see if we as a generation can come together, grit our teeth, put our heads down, do something that’s not very much fun, do something that by itself seems to be pretty trivial, but addresses a problem each and every one of us can recognize and when done on a large scale, really makes an impact.
I realize picking up trash is not necessarily the most glamorous service out there; it’s dirty, it’s boring, and it’s difficult to see how one person picking up old plastic bags and empty pop bottles really makes a difference. But that being said, there is no disputing that litter is a problem in every community in this state. My goal with the Ohio Day of Service is to have every a group of students from every college in the state spend at least one hour on April 9, 2011 picking up trash.
Now will a bunch of college students picking up trash on the same day really change the world? Probably not. However, the Ohio Day of Service isn’t necessarily about what we do today, it’s about seeing what we have the capability to accomplish in the future. If we’re able to pull this off, I believe we will send a very clear message that our generation is prepared to answer the call of our nation, to sacrifice, to bear the burdens of the past in order to ensure that our children and our grandchildren will live in a better world than ours.
I know this is pretty soon to be thinking about this as April is still months away but I have quite a few emails to send out until then. Also, if you feel that not just Circle K members, but students throughout your campus would be interested in participating in the Ohio Day of Service, I wanted to give you the opportunity to make this as big an event as you feel possible on Findlay’s campus.
Currently I’m 3/3 having obtained commitments of participation from various organizations at Ohio State, UC, and Miami. Let me know if you’re interested in participating as I’m anxious to hear if you’re on board.
Joe

Hey Courtney,
There is a student at OSU who contacted me about having our University of Findlay Circle K help him in April with a project he is trying to start. He wants at least one organization from each college campus to participate in it.. it's basically just cleaning up anywhere around the campus area/community for an hour on April 9th to help show how banning together can make a huge impact.
I can forward you the e-mail he sent me, but is there anyway we could e-mail out to all the Ohio college Circle K's? I could do it if you sent me all the e-mails, or you could if you didn't mind.
Let me know. Thanks,
Stefanie
