Greetings,
Below find some really great ideas to celebrate CKI Service Week 2011! I know my home club is organizing a BWB drive and collecting canned goods as part of a campus wide CANpetition. What will your club do?

March of Dimes

March of Dimes Service Projects for CKI Service Week
Want to make a difference in the lives of
newborn babies and their families during CKI Service Week 2011? Here are some projects that you can do during the week either at a club meeting, at a lobby table in your campus student center, or at your local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

PROJECTS:
1) Awareness Ribbons: To raise awareness and help with fundraising, make small ribbons to represent March of Dimes. When giving them out to people ask for a small donation of any amount they can!
2) Cards: Make cards for the family members to help brighten their day and let them know that people are supporting them.
3) Scrapbooking: Create scrapbook pages with spaces for the newborn’s pictures. This will allow them create their first memories with their new baby and help lighten their worries.
4) Fun Animals: Create fun animal decorations out of clean yogurt cups, googly eyes, and felt. These are good for the young siblings that are also waiting in the NICU.

VOLUNTEER AT A NICU:
1) Hold a breakfast or dinner for the families waiting in the NICU.
2) Make decorations that the NICU can use in the hospital and offer to put them up for them.
3) Gather new/gently used children’s books that can be read to the babies by their families or lent to siblings during long hospital visits.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: Contact your local March of Dimes chapter! Go to www.marchofdimes.com/contactus.html where you can find your state then call the number listed below and they will connect you to an office near you. Another option is to email them by filling out your information on the right side of the page, then include your questions or comments and check if you would like to request any materials.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact March of Dimes Ambassador, Rachel Webster at rachele...@gmail.com!

Students Team Up To Fight Hunger (STUFH)

I hope everyone has been plenty busy on how to incorporate STUFH into your week during CKI Service Week. Remember my challenge to donate $100.00 of my own personal money to a food bank of choice to the club who raises the most poundage in canned goods. So put up a good fight to end hunger insecurity and answer this call.

Don't want to hold a canned food drive during Service Week? Then don't. Don't want to even think about food during Service Week? Then don't. Actually, maybe for only one meal. A favorite project of mine to fight alongside STUFH is to skip one meal during the day, and instead of buying a $5.00 meal to feed yourself, use it feed others. Not only are you feeding the mouths of those who need it most, but it also gives you a chance to advocate against hunger insecurity and educate your community. Either way, we CKI members shows that we are able to fight hunger.

The ELIIMINATE Project and CKI Service Week

Awareness/Education Events

+ Club: Have a meeting themed for the ELIMINATE Project, encourage attendees to sign up for the newsletter, watch the recent YouTube videos, and use the presentation and talking points, which can all be found at theeliminateproject.org!

+ Campus: Volunteer to help advertise public health, public policy, international studies events that you may know of focusing with health in developing countries. Invite club attendees to attend and start a partnership with other organizations whose missions align with helping developing countries around the world. Set up a service fair together in a public space on campus to help each other’s initiatives.

+ Kiwanis Family Youth Organizations: On April 2nd, Kiwanis One Day, be sure to talk to the Board of Directors of Kiwanis to be sure they are informed and educating their attendees on the ELIMINATE Project at the event in preparation for the excitement and official ELIMINATE Project launch at Kiwanis ICON.

Flexible Fundraisers

+ Club: Donate Happy Cents to the ELIMINATE Project at your club meeting. Develop an incentive to raise more funds at a club meeting like awarding attendees that donate a particular amount, these prizes can be ELIMINATE Project focused such as health and well being items or by contacting UNICEF for promotional items.

+ Campus: Gather support from the University by contacting Dining Services to see if meal donations can be arranged for students to be able to donate the cost of a meal to a cause like the ELIMINATE Project.

+ Kiwanis Family Involvement: Host a restaurant night and invite all members of Kiwanis to come support the evening. Create an interclub schedule to talk about the event at Kiwanis Family meetings so many Kiwanis Family members can join the benefit. Be sure to organize promotional materials at the restaurant so friends and family can learn more about the cause too! Additionally, you can hand out flyers on campus around meal times for campus support.

Collaborative Fundraisers

+ Club: Hold a club formal, UNO tournament, March Madness bracket, Scavenger Hunt, etc. during a social where all proceeds for admission go to the ELIMINATE Project and winners get a fun prize!

+ Campus: Get the service organizations on campus together for a Mr. Service pageant, group dance competition, etc. Promote the event together to draw a lot of campus participation, and then reward a percentage of the money to the winning group. All other proceeds can go to the ELIMINIATE Project!
+ Kiwanis Family Involvement: Have a social aspect to Kiwanis One Day and hold a Talent Show and Benefit Dinner to collect donations for the entertainment. Involve all members from K-Kids to Kiwanis to get all ages and performers in for a night of great fundraising!

Large Scale Service Project (LSSP)

Early Bird Registration for LSSP (Large Scale Service Project) is Virginia Beach is now open!!! You can find the registration information at http://slp.kiwanis.org/CircleK/leadership/conventions/2011icon/2011LSSP.aspx.  Registration is $75 (housing separate), but that price only lasts until May 2nd! So hurry and get your registration in now, before the cost increases.

The event runs from June 20-22, 2011 and there will be a night of fellowship on Sunday, June 19th for those who arrive early. There will also be projects during the day Monday before we gather together for the opening session on Monday night. It’s a great choice to think about coming a night early as it will give you more time serving the Virginia Beach community for the minimal cost of an extra night in the hotel! Please keep this option in mind as you start planning to Serve in Sunshine!

Also, I'm pleased to announce the additions of the following Team Leaders to the LSSP Committee: Vickie Spera, Lauren Sparks, Shaun Pinlac, Shannon Zeiders, and Cory Trimm. They are joining the committee to help with finalizing plans for LSSP this summer and will be leading groups as we serve the Virginia Beach community this June!"

Sincerely,

The International Service Committee
