Serve it Up! *December 2009*
*MONTHLY E-ZINE OF SERVICE UPDATES PROVIDED
BY THE 2009-10 CKI SERVICE COMMITTEE*
*>>>Greetings!**
*
Thank you for taking the time to read our e-zine! On behalf of the CKI
Service Committee I am very excited to introduce you our December
issue of *Serve
it Up!* Every month during the 09-10 year members signed up for the CKI
e-mail reflector will be receiving updates on ideas for service projects,
updates on our service partners, and what to expect from our Large Scale
Service Project. The best part about it is that they are delivered straight
to your inbox in text form with no attachments, documents, or Adobe files to
open, pretty cool huh?
Enjoy everything that this December issue has to offer and if you have any
questions please feel free to e-mail
Krist...@gmail.com.
Happy Holidays to you and yours,
*Kristen M. Reed*
CKI Service Committee Chairwoman

*>>>What’s Up with STUFH*
by Toby Markham, Students Team Up to Fight Hunger CKI Service Ambassador,
toby.buck...@gmail.com
Hey CKI – 125,000 pounds of food. That is the goal that I have set for
STUFH – Students Team Up to Fight Hunger. I am currently working on an
Educational Piece that will have ideas of how you and your club can help us
achieve this goal. I know that if we all work together, we can meet and
even surpass this goal. If you are unsure about what STUFH actually is,
look out in the next week for STUFH 101. As always, if you have any
questions, please contact me. Remember to join the STUFH Facebook Fan
Page<

friends.
*>>>Boogie Down with Better World Books*
by Avanti Kollaram, Better World Books CKI Service Ambassador,
ihea...@gmail.com
How is your better World Books drive going? I hope it's fabulous! Here are
some things to keep in mind during your book drive:
- Continuously check up on your bins and empty them out, especially if
these bins are in an outdoor location! You don't want the books to get
drenched in rain or snow!
- Take advantage of all the great promotion materials BWB provides such
as fliers and other items! Ask your account representative for more
information about these! I especially recommend using fliers which promote
the organization, the service partner you have chosen and where the closest
bin is to that particular flier. This means that any one who passes by the
flier will know exactly where to find the closest bin to donate their
textbooks!
- Once your book drive is complete, you are ready to have your packing
party! It can get a bit difficult because maybe your CKI members have
already left home for the holidays. If that's the case, there is nothing
wrong with having your packing party in the spring! Perhaps you could even
make it a spring service project or as part of spring recruitment! Never the
less, don't forget about the $50 you have to spend for a packing party!
- Prescreen your books! They will send you a scanning gun that will tell
you if BWB can take the book or not. If they can't they will tell you the
closest place that will accept the books! This saves BWB so much time and
money and is exactly why this is such an economical service project. Instead
of filling up landfills, you'll know exactly where you book will still be
doing good! Best of all, if you pre-screen your books, you will receive up
to $1.00 per book. If you collect over 1000 books, you will receive $1.25.
Even if you don't pre-screen your books, you will still receive $0.50 per
book. Just remember, this money cannot be used towards your administrative
accounts; it must be used for service, either donated back to a service
project, or donate it other places such as the Tomorrow Fund!
- Don't forget to also donate your own textbooks. A lot of times as we
get involved in big service projects, we forget how powerful our own
involvement can be. Do you have any textbooks that you know you'll never
use? Maybe they have some wear and tear? Maybe it's not even a textbook but
a novel from your english class! As long as it's a college book of any kind,
BWB would love it!
- As you plan your classes for next semester, keep
betterworldbooks.comin mind as well as the amazing 10% discount. Also
watch out for the periodic
*15% holiday discount*!
Remember, if you run into any problems, do not hesitate to contact me! I
would love to help you out in any way you need me! My email is
ihea...@gmail.com and AIM screen name is CapitalGovAvanti. Happy
collecting!
>>>*UNICEF & You: Saving the Snowflakes*
by Lyssa Bergstrom, UNICEF/Six Cents CKI Service Ambassador,
lyssasue....@gmail.com
The Six Cents Initiative is on the move and with your help this December we
can spread the word of clean sanitation and proper hygiene. Worldwide,
nearly 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, and two in
five people are without basic sanitation. This year the Circle K
International Service Committee has set a goal of raising $28,210 for the
Six Cents Initiative. I am proposing to you, to your club, to your district,
and to your sub region to join together and accomplish the objective we have
set for Circle K International. $130.00 can provide a family hygiene kit
containing detergent, soap, wash basin, towels, bucket, toothbrushes, and
toothpaste for 10 families. 10 whole families!! We are setting the goal for
you as a District to raise funds for 7 kits. And you may ask how can you do
this? Well I am here to tell you how! If you have any future questions
please feel free to contact me, Lyssa Bergstrom at
cki6cents.ser...@gmail.com
For those of you who haven’t fundraised before, or for those of you who are
in need of some new creative ideas, here are some unique “seasonal”
fundraising techniques that clubs all around Circle K International have
been using for the Six Cents Initiative.
- *Snowman Poop Fundraiser*: During this holiday season, here is an
excellent fundraiser. Meet in front of a local store selling small bags of
marshmallows for $1.50 with a small note attached to it that says, "You've
been naughty, so here the scoop. All you get for Christmas is snowman poop".
- *Flamingo Fundraiser:* This idea involves deploying a flock of pink
plastic flamingoes in someone's yard or outside a business entrance. A note
is left explaining that the person or business has been selected by someone
to be 'flocked' for a good cause. And, it then goes on to explain that they
will have to pay $10 per flamingo to have them relocated. The fun part is
that each flocking victim then gets to pick the next victim. The flocking
process continues for the duration of the fundraising event.
- *Squeegee Day:* Here is an excellent idea- go to a local fast food
restaurant and ask them do hold a fundraiser. The idea is to ask people
at a local drive thru to donate money to have their windshields washed. We
have one person at the beginning of the drive thru asking the person if they
would like their windshield washed as a donation to the Six Cents
Initiative. If they say yes, our volunteer places a pamphlet under their
windshield wiper. Once they get to the front of the drive thru and they have
a pamphlet under their wiper, our team of two washes their windshield and
thanks them for their donation.
>>>*CKI Service Recognition Award**
*by Kristen Reed, Chair, CKI Service Committee,
subre...@circlek.org
What is black and white with pink polka dots eats string cheese and rides a
motorcycle while drinking Diet Pepsi? Hmm, I have no clue either but
something I do know about is the cool opportunities to be recognized by
Circle K International for your service achievements.
The Circle K International Service Recognition Award is designed to
recognize those members from each district who have had a significant impact
in the area of service to their campuses and communities. In addition to
being in good standing the perfect candidate must have completed at least
250 hours of service on behalf of his or her home club in the time period
April 1 to March 31. Individuals who have already received the Service
Recognition Award and who meet the eligibility requirements for the period
April 1 to March 31 may receive additional recognition for the next level
for which he/she qualifies.
Interested? Check out
www.circlek.org for the 2009-10 Awards Booklet or
contact your District Administrator for an application!

>>>*5 Holiday Fundraisers*
by Rachel Bennett, Secretary, CKI Service Committee,
subre...@circlek.org
1. Candy Grams: (candy canes or other holiday candy)—deliver them to
different classes through out the day; you can sell each one for $1 to $2
dollars.
2. Holiday Bake Sales: Show off your baking talents and make some holiday
goodies such as caramel apples, pumpkin pie, cookies, brownies, cup cakes,
peach cobbler, get creative and have fun!!!!
3. Hot Apple Cider or Hot Chocolate Stand: Remember when you had a
Lemonade Stand…well now instead of cooling down, let’s get people warmed up
with a nice hot cup of cider or hot chocolate, top it off with some whipping
and you’ll be set
4. Service Partner Bell Ringing: Grab a donation jar, Santa hat, and
small bell. Get on your campus and ring for our service partners. Stand on
the corners of your union or university mall with poster and signs
describing one of our service partners.
5. Jingle bell Run: A fun fundraiser for the holiday season is a *Jingle
Bell Run*. This fundraising event is similar to hosting a regular running
competition except everyone attaches a set of Christmas jingle bells to
their shoelaces.
>>>*LSSP Low Down*
by Minerva Thai, CKI Large Scale Service Project Chair,
md...@duke.edu
Can you believe it is already December? Time sure flies by! The LSSP
Committee has been searching for the best service opportunities that St.
Louis has to offer in anticipation of a fantastic 10^th anniversary event.
We’ve got creative fellowship activities, an Eat for Service event, touristy
attractions, and much more lined up on top of the service itself. Our
Publicity and Internal Marketing sub-committee is also committed to
producing at least 5 issues of our committee’s newsletter so keep your eyes
peeled for that information. It will give you some more insight into who we
are and what we do!
What can you do in the meantime for LSSP? Become a fan on the Facebook fan
page: CKI LSSP 2010! Make sure to invite all of your friends because you
will be getting our updates on there as we hear about them. Also, make sure
that you ask for LSSP registration money when people start wondering what
you want for Christmas ;). Our committee’s definitely working on bringing
you the most bang for your Circle K buck but a little extra spending money
won’t hurt!
One of the best reasons to start thinking about going to LSSP 2010: three
days of meaningful service with some of the most amazing people you’ll ever
meet!
*>>>Sleeping Children Around the World
*by Lauren Delana, CKI Representative, CKI Service Committee,
subre...@circlek.org
<
subre...@circlek.org>
Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) is a service initiative program
for Aktion clubs but is open to involvement from all Kiwanis family
branches. They strive to provide bed kits to needy children all over the
world, especially in developing countries, that may not have adequate
supplies to create a safe and warm place to sleep. All materials are
collected through donated materials or monetary gifts. To find more
information on how to get involved visit the Aktion club link on
www.kiwanis.org.

*>>>CKI Service Committee teams up with Facebook and Google!
*by Kristen Reed, Chair, CKI Service Committee,

*Need a place to share service ideas and connect with Circle K'ers around
the globe? Check out these two resources:*
-
http://www.facebook.com/pages/CKI-Service-Committee/177592082646 is
where you will find access to the official CKI Service Committee Fan page
on Facebook. We are hoping that as we add new fans we will be able to have a
greater outreach about events, resources, and opportunities to the entire
Kiwanis-family. If you could be ever so kind as to become a fan of us we
would greatly appreciate it!
-
http://groups.google.com/group/ckiservicechairs is also a new addition
to resources that we are providing this year. The link will take you to a
CKI Service Reflector for district and club service chairs. Every time a
new piece has been created by the Service Committee an email will be sent
over this reflector to announce it to all service chairs. It is through
increased communication with those who plan district and club projects that
we hope to increase involvement with our International projects and
programs.
