Greetings Circle K International!

On behalf of the Circle K International Service Committee, we would like to congratulate everyone on their outstanding service to your communities! We are incredibly happy to see all the CKI clubs incorporating the CKI Service Partners into weekly service activities!

With this e-mail, we hope to encourage even more clubs to get involved with our CKI Service Partners! You will also find information on the ELIMINATE PROJECT and LSSP! Please contact the respective ambassador with any questions or Juan Juarez (me) at subre...@circlek.org or Chad Gardner at subre...@circlek.org

Considering that you all do LOTS for the service partners, we have also included a way in which a service partner can give back to you. Click here to see a listing of internships that are hosted by Unicef! Apply today!

Finally, If you know someone who is talented in design, we are looking for a *NEW* logo to represent CKI Service week. The winner will receive $25 to the CKI store. Please email submissions to Chad or Juan (emails listed above)

Enjoy!

Serve It up!

STUFH (Students Teaming Up To Fight Hunger)

There are so many opportunities to do different kinds of service during CKI Service Week. This week is awesome week to work with STUFH in many ways. From holding a week-long collection drive, to volunteering at your local soup kitchen or food bank, you can dedicate to fighting against hunger. Another cool idea to do during service week is one you can get your K-Family involved in, especially on Kiwanis One Day, and that is to plant your own garden where you can donate the produce you will grow to local soup kitchens.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to working with our Service Partner, Students Teaming Up to Fight Hunger. If you would like more information on how to get involved with STUFH you can email me at donnesh....@gmail.com or visit their website at stufh.org.

Let's make it a week to remember with STUFH.

March of Dimes

Has your club held a fundraiser for March of Dimes, made cards or other items for families in the NICU, or want to host your own March for Babies walk? If you’ve said yes to any of these and don’t know what to do next, contact your local March of Dimes chapter! Go to www.marchofdimes.com/contactus.html where you can find your state then call the number listed below and they will connect you to an office near you. Another option is to email them by filling out your information on the right side of the page then include your questions or comments and check if you would like to request any materials.

Did You Know? Pre-term birth has declined by 4 percent in 2010! There is still a lot of work that needs to be done and March of Dimes needs your help to make another large success in 2011. Keep up the dedication to see that every baby will be born healthy one day!

Did your CKI club create or participate in any March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness Month or Day events in November? Let Rachel Webster, the CKI March of Dimes Service Ambassador, know at
rachele...@gmail.com and it could be the next Megaphone Feature on the Circle K International website!

Service that Saves Lives: The Six Cents Initiative

Our oldest Circle K International partnership, the Six Cents Initiative, began in August of 2007. Circle K partnered with UNICEF to provide children worldwide with the most basic necessity to life: clean water and sanitation. The great thing about this partnership is that 6 cents is all it costs to purchase a oral rehydration packet that can save a child's life, so even a small donation can truly make a difference. In just three short years since it's creation, Circle K members have saved 1,118,418 lives by supporting the Six Cents Initiative. Way to go! :)

Circle K members can join together to make an even bigger difference. If the members of Circle K International can raise $32,895, our organization will have raised over $100,000 for our Six Cents Initiative. That comes down to just $2.90 per member. Consider helping the Six Cents Initiative, because we need your help to join together in making a difference. We need your new inventive ideas to raise additional support for this project, and we need your dedication and persistence to make sure that we can help as many children as possible. Every child deserves a chance at life, so I'll be including monthly tips on helping to support the Six Cents Initiative.

1. Educate you and your club: Use the Project Overview at www.unicefusa.org/circlek to learn more about our partnership and/or take the World Water Crisis Tutorial at http://training.unicefusa.org/water-login.php

2. Advertise: Make flyers or small cards with water related facts that can be placed around town or campus to educate others. Consider cutting out flyers in the shape of a water droplets to grab attention. Check out the project overview flyer at www.unicefusa.org/circlek for additional quick facts that can be used.

3. Set up a fundraising team using our online fundraising tool at unicefusa.org/sixcentsonline. You can sign up as an individual or as a club!

4. Collect spare change: Begin a "Happy Dollars" fundraiser at your weekly officer meetings or club meetings and provide an opportunity to get to know what's going on in your fellow members' lives while creating a dedicated project that will continue to make a difference. It really is that easy! :)

If you want to share what you do in your club to support the Six Cents Initiative, let me know at
hras...@gmail.com or cki6...@gmail.com I'd absolutely love to hear about it!

Educate on ELIMINATE

A good method to educate Circle K members on the new Kiwanis Family Service Partner with UNICEF, the ELIMINATE Project is to present an informative piece at a meeting. Some surprising statistics to include are: that one baby passes every three minutes due to maternal neonatal tetanus, which is present in forty countries, but can easily be preventable with a series of vaccinations for sixty cents. Be sure the audience takes away that the Kiwanis Family is coming together to give UNICEF the final push to eliminate this very hard to reach disease that no one should experience. To enhance your presentation, try to incorporate different Kiwanis Family perspectives to get inspiring quotes for this new initiative. Additionally, every District can also present this information to their members at District Convention. Look into also having a Service Fair of the CKI Service Partners at the District Convention to get more ideas and more resources to your members! Similar to Kiwanis Convention, this upcoming year will kick off the ELIMINATE Project to take action towards the $110 million goal to eliminate the disease from the face of the Earth by 2015.

Better World Books

Why Should My Club Run a Book Drive?

Develop your LEADERSHIP skills and help to make a positive, life-long impact on someone’s life and embrace the FELLOWSHIP of working together as clubs. Proceeds from your book drive will help fund the CKI Leadership Academy, as well as, generate funding for a non-profit literacy partner. Pioneer the “green” SERVICE project on your campus to reduce your environmental footprint and make a positive global impact.

How do we get started?

Send an email to cir...@betterworldbooks.com with your name, school and phone number. A representative from Better World Books will contact you. You can also contact BWB by calling 1.800.894.0242 ext. 773.

Have some more fun with better world books!

  • Decorate bookmarks with information about BWB and where students can donate books; hand them out to students in place of flyers.
  • Dress up as your favorite book character and storm the dorms.  Knock on doors and inform people about your book drive!
  • Hold a Dr. Seuss or Harry Potter study break where students can come relax, participate in fun activities and don’t forget to tell them all about BWB.

Large Scale Service Project (LSSP)

The LSSP committee has been continuing to work hard to plan some awesome projects to pack a lot of service into our even this summer. Summer may seem far away, but we realize it's actually approaching quite fast. Some proof of this: Early Bird Registration for the Large Scale Service Project in Virginia Beach (June 20-22, 2011) begins February 1st! The cost at this time will be $75 (hotel accommodations separate). This is an exciting time to start planning to join us in Virginia Beach for the 11th Annual LSSP "Serving in Sunshine: Don't It Feel Good?" Can't wait to see you there!!!
