- The HP printer was using a WSD (Web Services for Devices) port. (note: WSD is meant for auto-discovery and things like that. I suppose it would be the proper way to go if the printer's IP address ever changed, but I had this address reserved for the printer's MAC address in DHCP, so it won't change.)

Hope you are well, please try to remove the print queue by going to the control panel > devices and printers > remove the printer icon, then please click on the Add printer button and readd the printer.

If that does not work, please uninstall the printer software from control panel > Programs > uninstall programs, as well you can remove the printer driver by using the Print Management tool. once the drivers and printer are removed, reinstall the printer.

The HPScan.exe application states "Scanner communication cannot be established..." however using Twack 32 i can make the scanner work. HP Print and Scan Doctor fails for HP Twain. I've reinstalled the full software solution multiple times with clearing out all HP related folders and drivers/packages. I've also disabled all antivirus and added additional firewall rules for HPscan.exe. I've also used 123.hp.com which simply re-downloaded the same driver I already had. I've also tried an older driver form 2020.

Another option will be to start from scratch: uninstall printer from control panel, uninstall printer drivers and then reboot. After that, you use a tool called PARK (Print Administrator Resource Kit) to completely remove printer DLL files from your computer. PARK is found on -en/drivers/selfservice/UPD/4157320/model/4157320 under Software-Universal Print Driver

I suggest you do what I eventually did after 6 hrs with Printer support (who tried hard and did their best but they can't overcome a defective driver) and 7 phone calls, just get a refund and buy a non-HP printer with the same specs but which actually performs as per those specs.

I guess the question is this: Have you tried to use the HP Universal Print Driver either PCL or Post Script. I realize your post is not really a question, just a rant, but if you have not tried the UPD I suggest you do that.

So, this is not a rant but yes I am very disappointed that I have spent so long without a solution and with HP selling a printer in which the advertised features that I needed have NEVER been available.

to be clear, you only have normal available or is it the default and you have to change on a per job basis to higher/lower quality. I do not want to belabour the point but as stated, we have sold many of these and have not had this issue come up with customers.

I quote her "... there were some reviews saying that the driver does not let you select a print quality, which was true, but I just installed the general mac version of the software (with less features I may add) and it lets me select a print quality, but HP needs to fix that issue with its original driver, I mean what kind of a thing is that to be missing from a driver lol its ridiculous. Everyone who gets this printer should contact HP and bug them about it until they release an updated version of their driver."

I also tested the UPD 6.9 Post Script driver and was offered the same options for quality settings. Likely they have reduced the choices to 2 so that if users do not set it they are automatically printing at the highest resolution to maximize toner usage. @itbProDev

I bought this printer in September, and now it won't respond at all. I have disconnected all power and ethernet cords on both ends, and let it sit over the weekend, but still when I turn it on it the screen will come on and it will power up as normal, but then it ceases to do anything other than continually power up and power down. The screen is unresponsive, it won't print, copy, or scan. If I enter a flash drive, it opens the memory device option screen, but it won't let me select any of those options. Even the back, home, and question mark buttons at the bottom of the screen are unresponsive. When I print to it, the job stays in the print que, with a status of error - printing. I have tried pressing on the bottom right corner of the screen to re-set it to factory settings, and it didn't change anything in the way it booted up.

Prior to this, it has randomly started cycling up and down, and occasionally it would re-set itself to its' original settings (French, I believe), and I would have to re-set the language, date, and time. It was a store model; I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I got it to work! If anyone else has this problem, I did a variety of things. Not sure which one fixed it, but here's what I did in the order I did it...I disconnected everything on every end. Power cord at wall and printer. Ethernet cord at printer and cpu. Deleted the printer drivers. Complete shutdown and restart on CPU. Reinstalled the printer drivers. Plugged everything back in. When I turned on the computer, I covered the bottom right corner of the printer screen with 3 fingers (I had read in one of the forums that was how to re-set the printer. I tried it before with one finger, and it didn't help, but I wasn't sure how much space to cover either...so I tried 3 fingers). When it came up, it copied right off. Printed a test page and it worked. IDK...I was about ready to throw it out, but now it works like new. WHEW!

"which printers work best with Mac air: I have a 2020 Air with Catalina 10.15.6. I have difficulty with my HP Laser Jet MFP M479fdw printer. I would like to know which printers Air users find compatible, especially laser jet printers."

If there ends up being not solution for Catalina, consider using a Virtual Machine(VM) for this printer (Windows-in-a-window). You would open items in it, and print right off of that. All would be accessed and would operate as desired on the VM. Virtual Machine applications include VMWare Fusion and Parallels. Learn more here: What Is a Virtual Machine? - VMWare Support.

You're right about that, and for what it's worth I have been specifying only Brother printers for the past several years. They don't bother attempting to write what usually results in poorly implemented Mac software, and their consumables are reasonably priced. Any one of them should work as well as any other.

Your HP should certainly work, but if it's been giving you trouble it might be an excuse to consider a different manufacturer. HP's Mac support has always been abysmal and I gave up on them long ago.

Make sure the HP printer queue in Printers & Scanners (adjacent to "Kind") specifically indicates AirPrint. If it does not, remove the existing entry and add the printer according to the instructions linked in About AirPrint.

Thank you, John, for taking the time to post this information. The list is extensive, and my present printer is included on it. I know the printers in the document are configured for AirPrint, but I am aware--through conversation other Mac users--that "all printers are not created equal" in this regard. I will certainly keep this list at hand while also hoping other users will name the specific models of printers that seem to work well with Air. Much appreciated.

John, thanks again. Your remarks are SO helpful to this relatively new Mac user. I'll keep an eye out for the Air Print designation that you indicate. I love the Air except for the issues with this printer. I will certainly give Brother serious consideration. In our PC days we had a Brother that gave us almost error-free service and lasted for years.

Unplug it and let it rest for a moment, then plug it back in again. While you wait, you might as well do the same with the printer. Needless to say there should be no routine need to do that, but it's a simple first step in fixing whatever might be wrong.

Thanks again. I tried both un-plus and re-plugs, and the process did restore connectivity. I also deleted the old HP drivers and downloaded a fresh set, which also contributes to functionality--at least for the time being. I am going to see how long these restorations last before making a decision about getting a different printer. In the meantime, I am keeping an eye out for Brothers.

Thanks again. You are a fountain of information. I am keeping an easy-to-find file of this correspondence. I will likely try to HP drivers until they foul up and then follow the suggestions in the material you just sent.

A lot of smart people work at HP. I don't understand why they can't make a seamless bridge to Apple. In fact, they can't even write support material that is accessible to a person who does not have a degree in computer science. I have graduate degrees. I am not stupid. But much of their material begins on a plane beyond my basic working knowledge of computers and printers and continues with assumptions that are not a part of why working mental world.
