Alternatives to Gravatar?

Hey guys, has anyone investigated an alternative method for displaying user avatars? I'm thinking of a potential case where an organisation wants to display images of users, but do not want their members to have to sign-up to a third-party sight like Gravatar.

If anyone's found a solution for this one, I'd be keen to hear about it.

I suppose the equivalent would be whatever thing they presently
store images of their members in. Possibilities include a LDAP
server, an Outlook address book, and, more likely, a web page.
